Why is the stock market mixed today

Oil fell sharply on hopes of US and Iran talks, CNBC reported. In the afternoon, investors moved money out of tech stocks, and the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 closed lower while the Dow ended higher.

Start with oil. Brent crude, the world benchmark, closed 7.63% lower at $104.77 a barrel, CNBC reported at 4:02 p.m. ET. The drop came on hopes that the US and Iran may resume peace talks, CNBC said. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said over the weekend that Washington would prefer to resolve the conflict “peacefully,” according to CNBC. Oil then fell further on reports that Iran’s supreme leader gave the government some authority to hold peace talks, CNBC said.

Two big oil producers fell. Occidental was down 5.12% and Exxon Mobil down 4.02% at 3:59 p.m. ET, in the last minute of trading.

Airline stocks rose. United closed 4.80% higher and American Airlines 3.81% higher. Delta was up 4.17% at 3:59 p.m. ET.

Tech stocks kept falling as investors moved money into other parts of the market, CNBC reported at 4:02 p.m. ET, naming Marvell, Lumentum and Oracle among the decliners. Investors are still looking hard at companies tied to the AI buildout after the major indexes had a losing week, CNBC said. Nvidia closed 1.26% lower, while Amazon held on to a 2.20% gain. Deutsche Bank raised its view of tech stocks back to overweight, CNBC said. Overweight means it expects them to beat the wider market. In other AI news, Anthropic, the maker of Claude, updated its IPO filing.

The gains faded after the morning. The S&P 500 was up 1% at 10:42 a.m. ET and closed 0.51% lower, CNBC reported. The Dow held on to its gain. Paint maker Sherwin-Williams rose 5.6% and Home Depot gained 3.3% in the afternoon, helping lift the Dow, CNBC reported. Two reports on the economy pointed different ways. The ISM index of factory activity beat forecasts, CNBC reported. Construction spending fell 1.9% in September (Census Bureau release). Economists polled by Dow Jones had expected a rise, CNBC said.

Before the open, tech companies made up 8 of the 15 biggest gainers on StockTitan’s pre-market board at 6:31 a.m. ET. Four of them make chips or the materials and test gear chips need.

AI and chip stocks up, oil producers down, before the open on November 2. Every AI and chip stock in the chart traded higher before the open while every big oil producer traded lower, as crude oil fell more than 4%.

October, which ended with Friday’s selling, set the scene. The Nasdaq and the S&P 500 both lost ground in the month, and CNBC said the Nasdaq suffered its worst losses since March 2025. The Dow rose almost 2% in October as money moved into steadier areas like healthcare.

Why is Marvell buying Lumentum

Marvell agreed to buy Lumentum for stock, in a deal that gave Lumentum a $115 billion enterprise value on October 28 prices, debt included. The two companies say AI data centers are moving from copper wires to light.

Marvell makes chips that connect computers and move data between them. Lumentum makes lasers and optical parts that send data as light. The companies say AI systems need more bandwidth than copper wires can carry, so the industry is shifting to optical links (Marvell and Lumentum release).

Lumentum shareholders will get 4.5 Marvell shares for each share they own. The companies valued that at about $1,132 a Lumentum share, a 23.9% premium. The $1,132 value uses Marvell’s October 28 closing price, and the premium compares it with Lumentum’s close that day. October 28 was the last trading day before market talk of a deal began, the companies said.

On Monday, Lumentum closed 18.59% lower and Marvell 12.72% lower. Marvell’s stock has fallen since October 28, when it closed at $251.65. At Monday’s close, the 4.5 Marvell shares offered for each Lumentum share were worth about $771. Lumentum closed at $684.40, about 11% below that value.

After the deal, Marvell’s current shareholders will own about 67% of the combined company. The companies expect it to close in the first half of 2028. It needs votes by both companies’ shareholders and regulators’ approval.

Why is EVgo stock up today

EVgo’s controlling shareholder, LS Power, proposed to buy the class A shares it does not own for $2.00 each in cash. The stock jumped toward that price on Monday.

EVgo closed at $1.85, still below the proposed price. LS Power controls about 57% of the votes at EVgo’s shareholder meetings, a filing shows (EVgo shareholder filing).

EVgo said on Monday afternoon that its board set up a special committee of independent directors to review the proposal. The proposal is not binding, and the board has made no decision on its response (EVgo release).

Why is Perion stock up today

Perion agreed to sell itself to Affle, a mobile advertising company, for $11.70 a share in cash. The stock jumped about 31% toward that price.

Perion, an ad technology company that helps brands run digital ads, closed 31.15% higher in regular trading. On Sunday it signed a deal for Affle to buy it for $11.70 a share in cash, a 34.5% premium to Friday’s close (Perion release). The deal values Perion’s shares at about $420 million.

The stock closed at $11.41, a little below the offer. The deal is expected to close in early 2027. It needs a vote of Perion’s shareholders and the end of the US antitrust waiting period.

Perion can also look for a better offer until December 11, 2026, under what the deal calls a go-shop period. Citibank is lending money for the purchase, and the deal does not depend on that financing (Perion release).

Why is Inovio stock up today

Inovio announced on Friday evening, after the market closed, that the FDA had approved its treatment for a rare airway disease. The stock closed Monday at more than three times Friday’s closing price.

Inovio closed at $1.89 on Monday, up from Friday’s close of about 60 cents. The FDA gave accelerated approval to VOCERYQ for adults with recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, a rare airway disease that often requires surgery, the company said (Inovio release).

Inovio says it is the first DNA medicine the FDA has approved. Under this accelerated approval, continued approval may depend on a further study, and the FDA requires Inovio to submit a draft plan for it by the end of 2026. The company expects to take orders and ship in about 60 days, with its medical and commercial field teams fully deployed in the first quarter of 2027.
