The selling in chip and AI stocks grew through the morning. By 10:58 a.m. ET, the Nasdaq Composite was more than 10% below its record from last month, CNBC reported. A fall that size is called a correction. The S&P 500 was down 3.2% and the Dow 1,136 points, according to CNBC. Shares of consumer staples, health care and utility companies rose, CNBC said.

The biggest chip stocks led the fall. In StockTitan's real-time data at 11:02 a.m. ET, Micron was down 15.84% and Broadcom 9.31%. Dow futures were up 262 points and S&P 500 futures down 0.1% at 5:43 a.m. ET, CNBC reported. US crude oil was steady after Wednesday's 8% drop, according to CNBC.

Results from Wednesday evening and this morning move single stocks the most. AppLovin jumped, and MNTN plunged after it cut its forecast for the year (MNTN release).

Why are chip stocks down today

Chip and data center stocks fell for a second day after the Democrats won Congress, including in states where voters pushed back on data centers, Reuters reported. The Nasdaq Composite closed down 5.52%, more than 10% below its record from last month, CNBC reported.

Thursday is the second day of the selling. On Wednesday, data center stocks fell as the election results came in, as StockTitan's data center stocks article explained. On Thursday, chip stocks extended those losses, Reuters reported. StockTitan's article on why AI stocks are down today explains what investors fear. Public opposition to the industry's fast growth has been rising in some key data center states, where Democrats won, according to Reuters. UBS strategists said about 30% of the data center additions expected in 2028 are now at risk of being affected, Reuters reported.

The fall reached across the chip industry. Nvidia, Marvell Technology and Intel all fell, Reuters reported. A fund that tracks chip stocks, the iShares Semiconductor ETF, fell more than 12%, its worst day since March 2020, CNBC reported. Seven of the 15 biggest pre-market losers on StockTitan's board at 6:30 a.m. ET were in the chip industry, from SK hynix, which makes memory chips, to Arm, which licenses chip designs.

Data center companies fell too. CoreWeave and Nebius kept falling after the open. CNBC tied their drop to worries about a backlash against the industry after the votes in several states. Server makers Dell and HPE fell too, Reuters reported.

On average, the eight chip stocks in the table closed down 12.97%, about three times the S&P 500's fall.

Before the open, the biggest tech companies moved the other way. Amazon, Meta and Alphabet rose, because a slower AI build-out was seen as helping them, Reuters reported. After the open, all three turned lower in StockTitan's real-time data, and Amazon closed down 2.19%, at its official close. Tesla and SpaceX fell for a second day, Reuters reported.

The selling continued overnight in Asia. South Korea's Kospi index closed down 5.28%, and SK hynix, a big memory chip maker, fell 9.03% in Seoul, CNBC reported. Investors there feared a Democratic Congress could bring tighter limits on data centers, according to CNBC. Chinese tech stocks went the other way, with Alibaba and Tencent rising in Hong Kong, CNBC said.

The AI companies are answering the vote. OpenAI repeated its promise to pay the full cost of the power its data centers use, CNBC reported. The pledge came two days after voters at the polls rejected the rapid spread of AI, CNBC said.

Why is Qualcomm stock down today

Qualcomm's sales of phone chips came in below what Wall Street expected, because of weak demand and less business from Apple, Reuters reported. The company says its businesses outside phones will keep growing.

Qualcomm reported its results for the quarter to late September after Wednesday's close. Its phone chip sales fell 26%, as StockTitan's Qualcomm article explains. That missed Wall Street's estimates, on sluggish demand and falling revenue tied to Apple, Reuters reported. Its overall earnings beat estimates, CNBC noted, yet the stock closed down 9.49%, at its official close in StockTitan's real-time data.

The company says it is growing outside phones. It expects sales from those businesses to grow more than 60% in fiscal 2027, its new year (Qualcomm release). In StockTitan's real-time data, Arm, which also reported on Wednesday evening, closed down 13.08%, at its official close. Its revenue rose 27% to $1.44 billion in the quarter (StockTitan's Arm article).

Biggest stock movers today and why

TrueBlue, which finds workers for businesses, closed up 25.61% at the regular-session close, in StockTitan's data. Its chief executive said the quarter beat the company's own expectations for revenue and profit (TrueBlue release). Snap, which owns Snapchat, fell after its revenue missed estimates, Reuters reported. After their results, Dutch Bros closed down 21.39% and Fastly 26.88%, in StockTitan's real-time data (Dutch Bros release, Fastly release).

Unity Software, which makes tools for building video games, rose after its results. It had its first profitable quarter under standard accounting since its listing (Unity release). Warby Parker, the glasses seller, rose too. It said it will start taking pre-orders for its first Intelligent Eyewear glasses on November 12 (Warby Parker release). Himax Technologies fell after giving a weaker forecast, and the table gives the news of the other movers.

Wendy's traded lower early in the morning, StockTitan's real-time data shows, then turned higher. In a release at 7:01 a.m. ET, Wendy's said its independent directors had rejected a $7.35 a share buyout offer from a group led by Trian Partners, saying it "substantially undervalues" the company. Its board had also adopted a shareholder rights plan on Wednesday, a step that makes an unwanted takeover harder (Wendy's release). Its US same-restaurant sales fell 5.7% in the third quarter (Wendy's results release).

Amazon had news of its own this morning. US Prime members can now order Uber Eats restaurant food right on Amazon, with no delivery fee on orders of $25 or more, the company said (Amazon release). StockTitan's article on the deal explains what changes for Prime members.
