Insights

Vishay's new wireless charging coils represent a significant advancement in power transfer technology. The 90% RH moisture resistance is a standout feature, addressing reliability concerns in humid environments. The 25% size reduction while maintaining power ratings up to 30 W is impressive, potentially enabling more compact device designs. The high-temperature operation to +105°C expands application possibilities in harsh conditions.

The use of powdered iron cores instead of ferrite is noteworthy, offering better stability across temperature ranges. The high saturation currents up to 22 A ensure consistent performance under varying loads. The alpha winding technique in some models, eliminating wire crossover, is an innovative approach to achieve a lower profile.

These advancements could give Vishay a competitive edge in the growing wireless charging market, particularly in industrial and medical sectors where reliability is crucial.

Vishay's new wireless charging coils are well-positioned to capitalize on the expanding wireless power transfer market. The global wireless charging market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 24.6% from 2021 to 2028, reaching $49.3 billion by 2028. Vishay's focus on industrial, medical and consumer electronics aligns with key growth sectors.

The enhanced moisture resistance and compact size address critical needs in these markets. For example, in medical devices, where sterilization is crucial, the 90% RH resistance could be a significant selling point. In the industrial sector, the high-temperature operation and durability features cater to demanding environments.

However, Vishay faces stiff competition from established players like TDK, Würth Elektronik and Laird. The company's success will depend on effectively marketing these technological advantages and possibly offering competitive pricing to gain market share.

While this product launch is positive for Vishay, its immediate financial impact may be Vishay's 2022 annual revenue was $3.5 billion, with the Inductors product segment (which includes these coils) contributing about 7% of total net revenue.

The wireless charging market's rapid growth could boost this segment's contribution over time. However, it's important to note that Vishay operates in a highly competitive market with pressure on margins. The company's gross margin in 2022 was 30.1%, down from 31.8% in 2021.

Investors should monitor how these new products impact the Inductors segment's performance in upcoming quarterly reports. If Vishay can leverage its technological advantages to gain market share or command premium pricing, it could positively affect margins. However, the overall impact on Vishay's financials may take several quarters to materialize significantly.

Devices Offer Power Ratings Up to 30 W, High Temperature Operation to +105 °C, and Saturation Currents to 22 A in Compact Footprints

MALVERN, Pa., Sept. 18, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today introduced new powdered iron based wireless charging transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) coils optimized for high humidity conditions up to 90 % RH. Designed for industrial, medical, and consumer electronics applications up to 30 W, the Vishay Dale IWAS3222CZEB190JR1, IWTX4646DCEB240JR1, IWTX47R0DAEB6R3JR1, and IWTX47R0EBEB240JR1 offer high temperature operation to +105 °C in 25 % smaller footprints than previous-generation devices and competing solutions.

The high moisture resistance of the devices released today results from their specialized shield coating, which provides superior environmental protection. In addition, the coils’ high saturation powdered iron makes them immune to the temperature fluctuations and sharp inductance drop-off behavior observed in ferrite-based solutions. Shield material selection is critical, as it is used to boost the inductance of the coil, contain any flux leakage, and maximize flux directivity.

Featuring a self-binding, enameled copper winding, the IWAS3222CZEB190JR1 Rx coil features inductance of 19.6 μH, Q of 28.5 at 200 kHz, and DCR of 357 mΩ. The IWTX4646DCEB240JR1, IWTX47R0DAEB6R3JR1, and IWTX47R0EBEB240JR1 offer inductance from 6.3 μH to 24 μH. With DCR as low as 40 mΩ, Q up to 200, and heat rating current to 7 A, the Tx coils maximize power transfer to the receiver element, while their high saturation currents up to 22 A ensure stable inductance and consistent performance across the operating current range.

For additional durability, the Tx coils feature a silk-covered litz wire that protects against scratching and wire deformation, provides improved insulation, and reduces the electrical skin effect and proximity losses. In addition, the IWTX4646DCEB240JR and IWTX47R0EBEB240JR1 are manufactured with an alpha winding technique that eliminates wire crossover and achieves the lowest profile possible.

Typical applications for the devices will include handheld, battery-powered tools and diagnostic and therapeutic instruments; drones; smartphones and tablets; gaming controllers; and wearable devices. RoHS-compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay Green, the wireless charging coils are available in rectangular, square, and round form factors.
