Macy’s (NYSE: M) reported its first quarter 2024 financial results, revealing mixed performance. The company achieved diluted EPS of $0.22 and adjusted diluted EPS of $0.27, surpassing expectations. However, net sales dropped 2.7% year-over-year to $4.8 billion. Comparable owned sales and owned-plus-licensed sales were down 1.2% and 0.3% respectively. The Bold New Chapter strategy showed promise, with the First 50 locations reporting 3.3% and 3.4% growth in comparable sales.

Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury showed minor sales increases, while Macy's non-go-forward locations suffered a 4.5% decline. Credit card revenues fell $45 million due to higher delinquency rates. SG&A expenses decreased by $39 million, yet expenses as a percentage of revenue rose. Macy's updated its 2024 guidance, projecting net sales between $22.3 billion and $22.9 billion and adjusted diluted EPS between $2.55 and $2.90.

Insights

Macy's Q1 2024 earnings report offers several insights into the current state and future trajectory of the company. Despite a 2.7% decline in net sales compared to Q1 2023, the company has managed to exceed its earnings expectations with a diluted EPS of $0.22 and adjusted diluted EPS of $0.27. This is a testament to effective cost management and operational efficiency.

However, it’s important to note that Macy’s comparable sales figures show a mixed performance. The go-forward locations, which include the First 50 stores, have shown encouraging growth, with sales up 3.3%. In contrast, non-go-forward locations experienced a decline in sales of 4.5%. This disparity suggests that Macy’s strategic investments in certain locations are paying off, but the overall retail environment remains challenging.

The gross margin rate of 39.2% is slightly down from last year's 40%, primarily due to increased discounting. While this could impact profitability in the short term, the company’s efforts to improve its supply chain have resulted in a slight improvement in delivery expenses.

Looking ahead, Macy’s updated guidance shows cautious optimism. The forecast for net sales and adjusted EPS has been slightly raised, reflecting the company’s belief in its strategic initiatives despite the broader economic uncertainties.

For retail investors, the key takeaway is Macy’s ability to execute its strategy effectively amidst a challenging retail landscape. The company’s focus on certain key locations and digital sales appears to be a prudent approach to drive future growth.

Macy’s has shown a strategic focus on its 'Bold New Chapter' initiative, with its First 50 locations acting as a benchmark for future performance. These locations achieved comparable sales growth of 3.3% on an owned basis, signaling that the strategy is resonating well with consumers. However, the broader picture reveals some challenges, with overall net sales declining by 2.7% compared to the previous year.

The disparity in sales performance between go-forward and non-go-forward locations suggests that Macy’s will need to continue refining its strategic investments to ensure broader retail success. Moreover, the decline in other revenues and credit card revenues indicates potential areas of concern that investors should monitor closely.

From a market research perspective, the important point to watch will be how Macy’s balances its investments in key initiatives with the changing consumer behavior patterns. The recovery in Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury sales is a positive sign, but sustaining this across all segments will be crucial.

Investors should pay attention to Macy’s ability to adapt its inventory and promotional strategies to align with consumer demands, especially as the macroeconomic environment remains dynamic.

Important Information Regarding Non-GAAP Financial Measures

The company reports its financial results in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). However, management believes that certain non-GAAP financial measures provide users of the company's financial information with additional useful information in evaluating operating performance. Management believes that providing supplemental changes in comparable sales on an owned-plus-licensed-plus-marketplace basis, which includes adjusting for the impact of comparable sales of departments licensed to third parties and marketplace sales, assists in evaluating the company's ability to generate sales growth, whether through owned businesses, departments licensed to third parties or marketplace sales, and in evaluating the impact of changes in the manner in which certain departments are operated. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) is a non-GAAP financial measure which the company believes provides meaningful information about its operational efficiency by excluding the impact of changes in tax law and structure, debt levels and capital investment. In addition, management believes that excluding certain items from EBITDA, net income and diluted earnings per share that are not associated with the company’s core operations and that may vary substantially in frequency and magnitude from period-to-period provides useful supplemental measures that assist in evaluating the company's ability to generate earnings and to more readily compare these metrics between past and future periods.

The company does not provide reconciliations of the forward-looking non-GAAP measures of comparable owned-plus-licensed-plus-marketplace sales change and adjusted diluted earnings per share to the most directly comparable forward-looking GAAP measures because the timing and amount of excluded items are unreasonably difficult to fully and accurately estimate. For the same reasons, the company is unable to address the probable significance of the unavailable information, which could be material to future results.

Non-GAAP financial measures should be viewed as supplementing, and not as an alternative or substitute for, the company's financial results prepared in accordance with GAAP. Certain of the items that may be excluded or included in non-GAAP financial measures may be significant items that could impact the company's financial position, results of operations or cash flows and should therefore be considered in assessing the company's actual and future financial condition and performance. Additionally, the amounts received by the company on account of sales of departments licensed to third parties and marketplace sales are limited to commissions received on such sales. The methods used by the company to calculate its non-GAAP financial measures may differ significantly from methods used by other companies to compute similar measures. As a result, any non-GAAP financial measures presented herein may not be comparable to similar measures provided by other companies.

(6)

Represents the period-to-period percentage change in net sales from stores in operation for one full fiscal year for the 13 weeks ended May 4, 2024 and April 29, 2023. Such calculation includes all digital sales and excludes commissions from departments licensed to third parties and marketplace. Stores impacted by a natural disaster or undergoing significant expansion or shrinkage remain in the comparable sales calculation unless the store, or material portion of the store, is closed for a significant period of time. Definitions and calculations of comparable sales may differ among companies in the retail industry.

(7)

Represents the impact of including the sales of departments licensed to third parties occurring in stores in operation throughout the year presented and the immediately preceding year and all online sales, including marketplace sales, in the calculation of comparable sales. Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s license third parties to operate certain departments in its stores and online and receive commissions from these third parties based on a percentage of their net sales, while Bluemercury does not participate in licensed or marketplace businesses. In its financial statements prepared in conformity with GAAP, the company includes these commissions (rather than sales of the departments licensed to third parties and marketplace) in its net sales. The company does not, however, include any amounts in respect of licensed department or marketplace sales (or any commissions earned on such sales) in its comparable sales in accordance with GAAP (i.e., on an owned basis). The amounts of commissions earned on sales of departments licensed to third parties and from the digital marketplace are not material to its net sales for the periods presented.
