Insights
Garmin Ltd.'s financial performance for the fiscal year 2023 indicates a robust economic position with record consolidated revenue and significant growth in key segments. The 8% year-over-year increase in revenue, alongside an expanded gross margin and a 27% increase in operating income for Q4, reflect strong operational efficiency and product demand. The company's ability to maintain a gross margin of 57.5% despite a slight decrease from the previous year demonstrates effective cost management and pricing power. The substantial growth in the Auto OEM segment by 54% in Q4, driven by increased domain controller shipments, is particularly noteworthy. This segment's expansion into domain controllers, including a multi-year contract set to commence in 2027, signals Garmin's strategic diversification and potential for future revenue streams.
Garmin's announcement of a dividend increase and a new share repurchase program is a positive signal to shareholders, indicating confidence in the company's financial health and a commitment to returning value. The share repurchase program, authorized through December 26, 2026, highlights the company's strong cash position and management's proactive approach to capital allocation. Investors should note Garmin's forward-looking guidance, projecting a 10% revenue increase for 2024, as it suggests continued growth momentum. However, the anticipated decrease in pro forma EPS to $5.40, compared to $5.59 in 2023, may warrant attention for its implications on profitability and earnings quality.
Garmin's performance in the fitness and outdoor segments, with respective revenue increases of 22% and 8% in Q4, underscores the company's strong positioning in the wearable and adventure watch markets. The recognition of Garmin's Venu 3 at the Consumer Electronics Show with three CES Innovation Awards, including Best of Innovation, is indicative of the company's technological leadership and brand strength in the consumer electronics space. The successful launch of new products, such as the Descent G1 Solar-Ocean Edition made from recycled ocean-bound plastics, showcases Garmin's commitment to innovation and sustainability, which may enhance brand loyalty and attract environmentally conscious consumers.
Garmin's dominance in the aviation segment, despite a 4% revenue decrease in Q4, is maintained by its selection for advanced air mobility applications, such as Eve Air Mobility's electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. This demonstrates Garmin's strategic partnerships and technological adaptability in a rapidly evolving industry. The marine segment's growth, fueled by the acquisition of JL Audio and new product launches like the ECHOMAP Ultra 2 series, positions Garmin favorably in the boating and angling markets. These developments across different segments suggest a diversified product portfolio that can mitigate risks associated with market fluctuations and consumer trends.
The financial disclosures and forward-looking statements provided by Garmin must be scrutinized within the framework of regulatory compliance, particularly with the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The company's adherence to non-GAAP financial measures, such as pro forma EPS and free cash flow, requires transparent reconciliation to GAAP metrics to ensure investor clarity. Garmin's share repurchase program, governed by Rule 10b5-1 and Rule 10b-18, must be executed with due diligence to prevent market manipulation and maintain shareholder trust. The legal implications of these actions are critical for maintaining corporate governance standards and upholding investor confidence in the company's management and operational decisions.

Non-GAAP Financial Information
To supplement our financial results presented in accordance with GAAP, this release includes the following measures defined by the Securities and Exchange Commission as non-GAAP financial measures: pro forma effective tax rate, pro forma net income (earnings) per share and free cash flow. These non-GAAP measures are not based on any comprehensive set of accounting rules or principles and should not be considered a substitute for, or superior to, financial measures calculated in accordance with GAAP, and may be different from non-GAAP measures used by other companies, limiting the usefulness of the measures for comparison with other companies. Management believes providing investors with an operating view consistent with how it manages the Company provides enhanced transparency into the operating results of the Company, as described in more detail by category below.
The tables below provide reconciliations between the GAAP and non-GAAP measures.
Pro forma effective tax rate
The Company's income tax expense is periodically impacted by discrete tax items that are not reflective of income tax expense incurred as a result of current period earnings. Therefore, management believes disclosure of the effective tax rate and income tax provision before the effect of certain discrete tax items are important measures to permit investors' consistent comparison between periods.

Pro forma net income (earnings) per share
Management believes that net income (earnings) per share before the impact of foreign currency gains or losses and certain discrete income tax items, as discussed above, is an important measure in order to permit a consistent comparison of the Company's performance between periods.

Free cash flow
Management believes that free cash flow is an important liquidity measure because it represents the amount of cash provided by operations that is available for investing and defines it as operating cash flows less capital expenditures for property and equipment. Management believes that excluding purchases of property and equipment provides a better understanding of the underlying trends in the Company's operations and allows more accurate comparisons of the Company's results between periods. This metric may also be useful to investors but should not be considered in isolation as it is not a measure of cash flow available for discretionary expenditures. The most comparable GAAP measure is net cash provided by operating activities.

Forward-looking Financial Measures
The forward-looking financial measures in our 2024 guidance provided above do not consider the potential future net effect of foreign currency exchange gains and losses, certain discrete tax items and any other impacts that may be identified as pro forma adjustments in calculating the non-GAAP measures described above.
The estimated impact of foreign currency gains and losses cannot be reasonably estimated on a forward-looking basis due to the high variability and low visibility with respect to non-operating foreign currency exchange gains and losses and the related tax effects of such gains and losses. The impact on diluted net income per share of foreign currency gains and losses, net of tax effects, was
At this time, management is unable to determine whether or not significant discrete tax items will occur in fiscal 2024 or anticipate the impact of any other events that may be considered in the calculation of non-GAAP financial measures.
