CarGurus Study Finds Over a Third of Car Shoppers Hope to Own an Autonomous Vehicle in Next Decade
CarGurus has released its latest consumer sentiment research on autonomous vehicles, revealing increased familiarity but stagnant excitement among U.S. consumers. A survey of 1,247 individuals indicated 33% are excited about self-driving technology, while 53% prefer to remain in control while driving. Safety concerns (51%) and costs (45%) are major hesitations. Tesla is viewed as the most trusted brand at 34%, with 56% of participants wanting brands to take responsibility for accidents. Despite skepticism, 56% would utilize AVs for safe transportation when unable to drive.

Comfort with self-driving technology grows, but hesitations around safety and cost remain

The CarGurus Self-Driving Vehicle Sentiment Survey compiled and analyzed consumer feedback on AV-related topics like comfort with self-driving, how people imagine utilizing the technology, and timeline to adoption.

Methodology
In April 2021, CarGurus surveyed 1,247 automobile owners in the U.S. through an online survey on their sentiments towards self-driving vehicles and driver- assistance features. Respondents were balanced in terms of key demographics (gender, region, income) according to the U.S. census. CarGurus also surveyed owners in 2019 (n= 1,146) and 2018 (n=1,873) for earlier iterations of this benchmarking study. In addition, the study was conducted in Canada and the U.K. in 2021.
