Duty of Vigilance: TotalEnergies Regrets NGOs' Refusal of the Mediation Process Proposed by the Paris Civil Court
TotalEnergies (TTE) expressed regret over NGOs' refusal to join the proposed mediation regarding legal proceedings in France related to its Tilenga and EACOP projects in Uganda and Tanzania. The court has scheduled pleadings for December 7, 2022. The NGOs claim TTE did not sufficiently manage social and environmental impacts, citing France's 'duty of vigilance' law. TTE plans to demonstrate that its vigilance plan is effectively implemented, including compensation measures where 92% of agreements for Tilenga and 74% for EACOP have been signed. Biodiversity actions have also been initiated.
- 92% of compensation agreements for the Tilenga project have been signed, with 88% of compensation paid.
- 74% of compensation agreements for the EACOP project in Uganda have been signed, with nearly 60% compensated.
- 67% of compensation agreements for the EACOP project in Tanzania have been signed.
- Third-party monitoring indicates 70% of respondents report improved lives after compensation payments.
- Biodiversity action plans include restoring 1,000 hectares of forest and preserving 10,000 hectares.
- The mediation refusal by NGOs could prolong legal proceedings and complicate stakeholder relations.
In connection with the hearings scheduled before the Paris Civil court today,
Following this refusal, the court decided that the pleadings would take place on December, 7, 2022.
