Key Terms

peak shaving technical
Peak shaving is the practice of reducing or shifting electricity use during the times when demand and prices are highest, often by using stored energy, temporary cutbacks, or shifting tasks to off-peak hours. For investors, it matters because lowering those costly peak charges can improve a company’s profit margins, reduce the need for expensive grid upgrades, and create new revenue opportunities from programs that pay for load reductions—like smoothing out rush-hour traffic to avoid toll spikes.
tariff optimization financial
Tariff optimization is the process companies use to arrange sourcing, shipping routes, product classifications, and contract terms so they pay the lowest legal import or export duties while staying compliant with trade rules. It matters to investors because lower tariffs can boost a company’s profit margins, protect pricing power, and reduce the risk of costly penalties—similar to choosing a route that avoids tolls to cut travel costs without slowing the trip.
net metering financial
Net metering is a utility billing practice that lets customers with on-site power generation, like rooftop solar, receive credit for electricity they send back to the grid; excess production reduces the amount they owe when they draw power later, similar to depositing and withdrawing from a cash account. For investors, net metering affects demand for distributed generation, the economics of rooftop solar installers and battery makers, and utility revenue and rate structures, all of which influence company profits and growth prospects.
dynamic tariffs financial
Dynamic tariffs are charges on imported or exported goods that change automatically based on preset conditions—such as market prices, trade volumes, or political triggers—rather than staying fixed. Think of them like a highway toll that rises when traffic or demand spikes; for investors, dynamic tariffs can quickly alter costs, pricing, profit margins and supply-chain decisions, creating both short-term volatility and strategic implications for companies exposed to international trade.
grid flexibility technical
Grid flexibility is the power system’s ability to change how and when electricity is produced, stored or used so supply and demand stay balanced as conditions shift — for example when the sun stops shining or many people turn on air conditioners. For investors it matters because higher flexibility reduces blackout risk, supports more renewable energy, and creates opportunities for technologies and services (batteries, smart controls, demand management) that can earn new revenue or cut utility costs.
battery inverters technical
Battery inverters are devices that turn the electricity stored in batteries into the form used by homes, businesses, or the grid and manage charging, safety and power flow—think of them as a power adapter and traffic controller for stored energy. Investors care because an inverter’s efficiency, reliability and software features affect how much usable energy is available, how long the battery lasts, and whether the system can save money or earn revenue from grid services, all of which influence returns and risk.
  • The new commercial storage system reaches up to 197 kWh for medium-to large-scale commercial and industrial applications, with up to 4 MWh per site
  • Building on strong adoption of SolarEdge’s 102.4 kWh storage system the new battery highlights accelerating demand and expanding opportunities for the company in the commercial storage segment

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- SolarEdge, a global leader in smart energy technology, today announced the launch of its new higher capacity commercial storage system in Europe and Asia. Now available for order, the new CSS-OD 197 kWh solution offers commercial businesses a tightly integrated, high-efficiency solar and storage solution to maximize the economics of solar self-consumption.

The new SolarEdge CSS-OD 197 kWh battery solution

Designed for indoor or outdoor commercial and industrial (C&I) solar installations, the new CSS-OD 197 kWh comprises a 197 kWh-rated Battery Cabinet paired with one or two 50 kW battery inverters and is scalable up to 1 MW and 4 MWh per site. Supporting a wide range of C&I storage use cases for medium- to large-scale commercial sitesi, the new CSS-OD 197 kWh-rated battery supports multiple applications and storage optimization modes including maximized self-consumption, peak shaving, tariff optimization, and export and import limit management. Other key benefits include robust safety and cyber security protections, simplified installation, and accelerated commissioning.

The expansion of SolarEdge’s commercial storage portfolio builds on strong sales of the SolarEdge CSS-OD 102.4 kWh-rated storage system, which was launched in late 2024 and is now installed at scale worldwide. Adding commercial storage to SolarEdge’s large base of C&I solar installations represents a significant and immediate new revenue opportunity for PV installers, as more businesses move towards self-consumption.

Naama Ohana, Chief Commercial & Industrial Division at SolarEdge, comments: "The market response to our first CSS-OD has been extremely encouraging, creating a strong new revenue stream from new sites and our large C&I solar install base. The launch of the higher-capacity battery will help unlock even more opportunities for our partners, primarily for sites which require more storage capacity, as demand for self-consumption in the C&I sector continues to accelerate. As markets shift away from net metering, and with emerging opportunities in dynamic tariffs, peak shaving, and grid flexibility, the use cases for commercial storage are expanding and the economics are clear.“
