SJI, OPAL Fuels Begin Construction on Burlington Renewable Natural Gas Facility
South Jersey Industries (SJI) and OPAL Fuels (Nasdaq: OPAL) have commenced construction on a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) facility at the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex in Florence Township, NJ. The facility will produce nearly 0.92 million MMBtus of RNG annually, equivalent to approximately 6.5 million gas gallons, using methane from landfill decomposition. OPAL Fuels will distribute the RNG to heavy-duty trucks, reducing emissions and fuel costs. The project aims to displace over 530,000 metric tons of CO2 annually, addressing methane and transportation emissions. This is the second collaboration between SJI and OPAL Fuels to advance renewable energy solutions in New Jersey.

The commencement of construction on the Burlington RNG facility marks a significant milestone for both SJI and OPAL Fuels. With an annual design capacity of
The project's expected reduction of
The Burlington RNG facility represents a significant environmental win. By capturing methane from landfill decomposition, the project tackles one of the most potent greenhouse gases head-on. The projected reduction of over 530,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent annually is substantial, equivalent to removing about 115,000 cars from the road each year.
Moreover, the project's focus on heavy-duty trucks targets a notoriously difficult sector to decarbonize. This approach could serve as a model for other landfills nationwide, potentially catalyzing a broader shift in waste management practices. However, it's important to monitor the actual emissions reductions achieved once the facility is operational, as real-world performance can sometimes differ from projections. Overall, this project aligns well with increasing regulatory pressures and corporate sustainability goals, potentially boosting both companies' ESG profiles.
This collaboration between SJI and OPAL Fuels demonstrates a strategic positioning in the rapidly growing RNG market. The project leverages OPAL Fuels' vertically integrated model, from production to distribution, which could lead to improved margins and market control. The focus on serving heavy-duty trucks taps into a high-demand, less saturated market compared to passenger vehicles.
Investors should note that this is the second collaboration between these companies, indicating a potentially scalable partnership model. This could lead to accelerated growth and market penetration. However, the RNG market is becoming increasingly competitive and the success of this project will depend on factors such as production efficiency, distribution network effectiveness and the ability to secure long-term offtake agreements. Keep an eye on how this project impacts both companies' market share and profitability in the coming years.
Using proven technology, the project will capture methane produced naturally from the decomposition of organic material from the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex and transform it into RNG, a low-carbon, low-cost transportation fuel. Approximately 6.5 million gas gallons equivalent (GGE) of RNG can be produced annually from the design capacity of the plant. OPAL Fuels will distribute the RNG via its fueling station network to heavy-duty trucks to help lower emissions from these vehicles while also reducing fuel costs for these fleets. Once fully operational and when used as a transportation fuel, the RNG produced at the Burlington County Resource Recovery Complex will reduce methane emissions from the landfill and avoid the use of fossil fuels, and is expected to displace over 530,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year. As such, the project is addressing the two most critical greenhouse gas issues causing climate change today: methane and transportation emissions.
