Key Terms

renewable natural gas medical
Renewable natural gas is methane captured from organic waste—like landfills, farms, or wastewater—and cleaned to the same quality as conventional pipeline gas so it can be used for heating, electricity, or vehicle fuel. Investors care because it turns waste into a revenue-generating commodity, can qualify for carbon credits or government incentives, and can reduce a company's emissions profile, affecting long-term costs, regulatory risk, and market demand much like converting trash into sellable fuel.
rng technical
Renewable natural gas (RNG) is methane captured from organic waste sources—like landfills, farms, or wastewater—and cleaned to match the quality of conventional natural gas. For investors, RNG matters because it turns waste into a marketable, low-carbon fuel that can create new revenue streams, qualify for environmental credits, and reduce a company’s carbon footprint much like turning trash into a sellable product.
mmbtus technical
mmbtus stands for million British thermal units, a standard measure of energy used to quantify natural gas and other fuels; one MMBtu represents the amount of heat needed to raise one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit, scaled up to a million units. Investors follow prices and volumes quoted in MMBtus because they show how much usable energy is being bought or sold—similar to tracking gallons of gasoline—so changes affect producers’ revenues, utility costs, and the economics of energy projects.
gasoline gallon equivalents technical
A gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE) is a standardized unit that expresses the amount of energy in alternative fuels as equal to one gallon of gasoline, letting different fuels be compared on the same scale—like converting various currencies into dollars to compare prices. Investors use GGE to compare fuel costs, operating expenses, vehicle efficiency and revenue metrics across technologies and fuel types, making financial comparisons and forecasts more meaningful.
section 45z clean fuel production credit regulatory
A Section 45Z clean fuel production credit is a government tax credit that rewards producers for making transportation fuels with substantially lower greenhouse‑gas emissions. Think of it as a per‑unit subsidy or bonus payment tied to how clean the fuel is; it improves a producer’s cash flow and project returns by effectively raising the price they receive. Investors care because the credit can turn otherwise marginal projects into profitable ones, change competitive dynamics in fuel markets, and alter company valuations and capital‑investment plans.

ROSEBORO, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- OPAL Fuels (Nasdaq: OPAL), a leading vertically integrated producer and distributor of renewable natural gas (RNG) welcomed Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. (NC-03) to its Sapphire RNG facility at the Sampson County Landfill in Roseboro, North Carolina. The visit included a tour of the facility and a meeting with OPAL Fuels Co-Chief Executive Officer Adam Comora to discuss the role of domestic RNG production in strengthening American energy security, supporting Eastern North Carolina’s economy, and providing heavy-duty fleets with a cost-effective, lower-emissions alternative to diesel.

The Sapphire RNG facility captures naturally occurring methane from the decomposition of organic waste at the Sampson County landfill and converts it into pipeline-quality RNG that powers heavy-duty fleets across the country. The plant has a nameplate design capacity of approximately 0.80 million MMBtus (6.6 million gasoline gallon equivalents) per year.

“We were honored to host Dr. Murphy and showcase how facilities like Sapphire turn local landfill waste into American-made energy,” said Adam Comora, Co-Chief Executive Officer of OPAL Fuels. “Sampson County is home to a productive facility, and policies like the Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit have given producers like us the confidence to invest in the infrastructure, jobs, and long-term economic growth that goes along with it. We appreciate Dr. Murphy’s leadership and his interest in seeing this work firsthand.”

“I enjoyed touring the OPAL Fuels facility in Roseboro and meeting with senior leadership to discuss the future of renewable energy development in Eastern North Carolina,” said Congressman Greg Murphy, M.D. “These conversations are critical as we work to support policies that encourage responsible energy development, strengthen our workforce, and expand opportunity across the region. America needs reliable energy in all forms that is safe and secure, powers our economy, and keeps our beautiful ecosystems healthy.”

RNG produced at facilities like Sapphire is one of the most readily scalable solutions available today for heavy-duty transportation. By capturing methane that would otherwise be released or flared and converting it into vehicle fuel, RNG gives fleet operators greater pricing stability and lower operating costs compared to diesel, while also delivering meaningful domestic energy security advantages
