Insights

The planned CEO transition at Manulife represents a significant leadership change for one of North America's largest insurers. Roy Gori's tenure saw notable achievements in digital transformation and risk management, resulting in strong shareholder returns. His successor, Phil Witherington, brings extensive experience from key roles within Manulife and previous positions at HSBC and AIA.

The selection of an internal candidate with both CFO and Asia CEO experience suggests continuity in strategy while bringing strong financial acumen to the role. Witherington's background in both developed and emerging markets is particularly relevant given Manulife's significant Asian operations. The 6-month transition period until May 2025, followed by Gori's advisory role through August 2025, indicates a well-planned succession strategy to maintain operational stability.
