While Wi-Fi has now become ubiquitous in public spaces, providing free high-speed connectivity to aircraft traveling 500 mph at 35,000 feet was a unique challenge in 2013. To set a new standard of onboard connectivity, JetBlue worked with satellite internet provider Viasat to integrate the highest speeds offered inflight, making it possible for customers to have the bandwidth to stream video and use multiple devices at once—a radical capability that many airlines are just now integrating into their service. Through product testing and evolution, and the launch of second-generation satellites, JetBlue and Viasat were able to expand high-speed coverage across JetBlue’s network, paving the way for its transatlantic expansion.
“JetBlue has been a disruptor to legacy carriers and a trailblazer in onboard technology since its inception with seatback entertainment at every seat, and we have continued to raise the standard with our unparalleled inflight Wi-Fi,” said Mariya Stoyanova, director of product development, JetBlue. “Recently, we’ve seen other airlines adopt products and services that JetBlue has had onboard for years—legacy carriers realize that when we’re in-market, they can’t offer bare-bones service. We’re pushing the entire
Over the last decade, Viasat has continuously upgraded its ground network infrastructure to improve stability, connectivity and coverage, which resulted in an onboard performance and coverage that extends to JetBlue flights over the Atlantic,
“It has been a thrill for our team to support JetBlue so closely over the decade to disrupt what customers can reliably expect from inflight Wi-Fi: streaming, browsing and staying connected with family and the office while on a JetBlue aircraft,” said Don Buchman, GM and VP, Commercial Aviation at Viasat. “This collaboration includes constantly adapting to digital trends and behaviors, such as popular, new apps or the improving quality of video on the go.”
JetBlue and Viasat’s continuous adaptation to changing trends as digital consumption habits shift enabled JetBlue's inflight Wi-Fi to evolve and meet the changing needs of customers who are looking for a multiscreen experience—the ability to access their favorite streaming service from their laptop, check-in with loved ones and update their social media with their smartphones, and cross-off their work to-do lists. The multiscreen experience has contributed to JetBlue customers using Fly-Fi on each flight four times as much as customers on other airlines use their Wi-Fi services.
JetBlue is proud to lead the aviation industry in technical achievements that have not only contributed to an award-winning onboard experience but have pushed the industry standard forward. Whether with seatback entertainment at every seat, free Wi-Fi for all, the most legroom in coachb, or self-service snacks in the JetBlue Pantry®, JetBlue consistently sets the standard for high-quality onboard experience that has disrupted the aviation industry since the airline’s inception in 2000.
