Insights
The recent report from Hepsiburada detailing the progress of their 'Trade and Technology Empowerment for the Earthquake Region' program indicates a significant increase in active merchants and sales volume in the affected region. The addition of approximately 16,000 active merchants and the generation of a trade volume exceeding TRY 3 billion are indicative of robust growth for the company within a relatively short time frame. This growth is particularly notable considering it has been achieved in an area affected by an earthquake, suggesting effective crisis management and strategic market penetration.
Furthermore, the empowerment of over 3,000 women entrepreneurs and women's cooperatives, contributing to a trade volume of TRY 174 million, aligns with global trends towards inclusive economic growth and could positively influence investor perception. The company's social responsibility initiatives, such as reaching out to more than 4,000 children and providing e-commerce training to university students, may enhance Hepsiburada's brand reputation and loyalty, potentially leading to long-term benefits.
The opening of E-Commerce Specialization Centers by Hepsiburada is a strategic move that could strengthen the company's market position by fostering a new generation of online sellers. Training over a thousand merchants signals an investment in the human capital of the region, which can lead to sustained growth and innovation in the e-commerce sector. This initiative may also act as a catalyst for regional economic development, potentially creating a positive feedback loop that can attract further investment.
The reported figures suggest that Hepsiburada's platform is effectively scaling, which can be attributed to its focus on integrating local businesses into the digital economy. This may serve as a case study for e-commerce platforms operating in emerging markets or regions recovering from natural disasters, highlighting the potential for digital platforms to contribute to economic recovery and resilience.
Hepsiburada's program not only demonstrates corporate social responsibility but also integrates sustainability into its business model. The focus on empowering women entrepreneurs and the company's outreach to children through social responsibility activities reflect an understanding of the importance of social capital. These actions could lead to a more sustainable and equitable business ecosystem in the long run. Investors increasingly value companies with strong environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices and Hepsiburada's program could potentially enhance its ESG profile.
It is also worth considering the long-term impact of such initiatives on the local economy and society. By fostering entrepreneurship and providing training, Hepsiburada is contributing to the development of human capital, which is a critical component of sustainable economic development. This approach could lead to improved livelihoods and resilience in the face of future challenges.
Since the Program's launch in March 2023:
- The total number of active merchants operating in the earthquake region has reached approximately 16,000, with around 2,400 new businesses selling their products online through Hepsiburada.
- Active sellers in the earthquake region sold a total of 6.2 million products through 3.9 million orders, generating a trade volume exceeding TRY 3 billion.
- The trade volume generated by over 3,000 women entrepreneurs and women's cooperatives in the region reached approximately TRY 174 million.
- In addition to its E-Commerce Specialization Center in
Adana , in November, 2023, Hepsiburada opened its second center (in Hatay). Through the E-Commerce Specialization Centers, Hepsiburada supports existing merchants and organizes training courses and programs for those who are new to the e-commerce market. Over a thousand merchants from the region have benefitted from such training courses. - Hepsiburada has reached out to more than 4,000 children in the region through the Program's social responsibility activities.
- Hepsiburada, in association with the "Promise for Tomorrow Training" program, organized "E-Commerce, Entrepreneurship and Marketing" courses for third and fourth year university students in the provinces affected by the earthquakes. Upon its launch, one hundred young people participated in the training program to commemorate the centennial of the Republic of Türkiye.
The Program is expected to last for two years as of its inception.
