Nitya Jakka, a high school junior from Aurora, Illinois, has developed a solution aimed at reducing food waste by tracking ethylene production in crops through her company, Terraclu. Ethylene is a gas released as fruits and vegetables ripen, and by monitoring this process, companies can optimize storage conditions to maintain produce freshness.

This innovation comes as 14% of crops, totaling 56 million tons, are lost globally between harvest and retail, wasting vital resources. Jakka's initiative highlights the intersection of education and sustainability, stemming from her time at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, which emphasizes STEM learning. Additionally, Enbridge has supported the academy's PROMISE program with $10,000 in grants since 2021, promoting STEM education for underrepresented youth.

Enbridge has extended its support for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank through financial contributions and volunteer efforts. Recognizing that one in nine central Pennsylvanians faces hunger, the Food Bank, with help from over 16,000 volunteers, provides essential food assistance to more than 150,000 people each month across 27 counties. The organization has seen a significant increase in demand since 2009, leading to a fivefold growth in food distribution in the past decade.
