Ciena (NYSE:CIEN) has released a global survey revealing dramatic shifts in data center networking needs driven by AI workloads. The study, conducted with Censuswide across 13 countries, surveyed over 1,300 data center decision makers.
Key findings show that 53% of respondents expect AI workloads to be the biggest strain on data center interconnect (DCI) infrastructure in the next 2-3 years, ahead of cloud computing (51%) and big data analytics (44%). About 43% of new data center facilities will be dedicated to AI workloads.
The survey highlights that 87% of participants anticipate needing 800 Gb/s or higher per wavelength for fiber optic capacity. Additionally, 98% of experts emphasize the importance of pluggable optics for reducing power consumption and physical footprint.
For Large Language Model training, 81% of respondents believe it will occur across distributed data center facilities. Most respondents (67%) prefer Managed Optical Fiber Networks over dark fiber for long-haul connectivity.
