A glass and metal line chart ribbon rising and then dipping against a dark navy background, with gold sparks breaking away above its peak

Stocks closed a little higher on Wednesday after the Fed kept interest rates at 3.75% to 4%, Yahoo Finance reported. After the bell, Fortinet and Alphabet fell in after-hours trading after their results, while Microsoft and Chipotle rose, by StockTitan data at 6 p.m. ET. In regular trading, Vertiv jumped after strong orders and Enphase fell after forecasting lower sales.

Stocks keep small gains after the Fed as Wendy’s confirms Trian’s buyout proposal

Stocks held their small gains in the hour after the Fed’s decision. The Dow and the S&P 500 were slightly higher and the Nasdaq Composite near flat, Yahoo Finance reported at 2:48 p.m. ET. At his press conference, Chair Kevin Warsh said one of the Fed’s eight meetings in 2027 will be given to longer-term strategy, with no rate vote, Yahoo Finance reported. Our Fed decision article explains the vote.

Wendy’s confirmed at 2:44 p.m. ET that it received the $7.35 a share cash proposal from Trian and its partners, which is non-binding, meaning no commitment to a deal. A committee of independent directors will evaluate it, the company said (release). Its stock was up 14.4% at 3:01 p.m. ET.

Vertiv widened its gain to 17.3% at 3:01 p.m. ET, its largest on our hourly checks today.

2:02 p.m. ET

The Fed holds rates steady in a 10 to 2 vote as the Dow and S&P 500 edge higher

The Federal Reserve, the US central bank, kept its benchmark interest rate at 3.75% to 4%, its statement shows. Two officials, Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack, voted for a quarter-point hike instead, so two of the 12 voters wanted higher rates now. The statement said the economy is expanding at a strong pace and inflation remains elevated.

After the decision, the Dow and the S&P 500 edged higher and the Nasdaq Composite held flat, Yahoo Finance reported shortly after 2 p.m. ET. The SPY fund that tracks the S&P 500 was up 0.2% at 2:01 p.m. ET, according to StockTitan real-time data.

The day’s two themes held through the decision. Vertiv was up 14.5% at 2:01 p.m. ET after raising its sales forecast, and Enphase, which said higher rates hold back home solar, was down 17.1%.

7:03 a.m. ET

Vertiv soars and Enphase sinks as futures wait on the Fed

Stock index futures were split early on Wednesday, with Nasdaq futures higher and Dow futures lower, Reuters reported, as memory chip stocks rose after SK hynix’s results.

The two largest moves that came with company results were Vertiv’s and Enphase’s. Vertiv was up 16.0% at 7:03 a.m. ET after raising its forecast for the year, and Enphase was down 17.7% after forecasting lower fourth-quarter sales. Logitech and Robinhood also fell after their results; the movers section below has their moves.

The Fed announces its interest rate decision at 2 p.m. ET, at the end of its October 27 and 28 meeting. Reuters reported that expectations lean heavily toward a pause after the Fed raised rates last month.

Why are Fortinet and Alphabet stocks down after hours

Both reported growth after the close, and each release or our article on it also carries a softer number. We report what each said, not why traders sold.

Fortinet reported revenue up 20% and raised its 2026 revenue forecast (release). Our Fortinet article found the raise was the smallest of its three this year. The release also cut its forecast for service revenue, the subscriptions and support customers pay for over time, our article found.

Alphabet’s Google Cloud revenue rose 103%, while growth in Google Search revenue slowed to 12% from 17% the quarter before, our Alphabet article found. Microsoft, which rose after hours, said revenue from Azure, its cloud computing business, grew 48% (release), and our Microsoft article notes that beat Microsoft’s own forecast.

Biggest stock movers today and why

By 3 p.m. ET, most stocks on StockTitan’s movers board had put out a company release since Tuesday’s close. For each mover below we give the company’s own news, or say plainly that we found none on StockTitan.

By our count, 20 of the 30 stocks on StockTitan’s live movers board at 3:00 p.m. ET had a company release since Tuesday’s close. A release does not prove what moved a stock, and one of the 20 was only a notice: PacBio announced conference appearances.

Vertiv and Enphase led the regular session’s story even though smaller companies moved more, because each ties into a bigger story of the day. By StockTitan data, Vertiv is the largest company on the 3:00 p.m. ET movers board by stock market value. Enphase named higher interest rates as a headwind for US home solar in Tuesday’s results, ahead of Wednesday’s Fed decision.

With the main indexes up only slightly at the close, as Yahoo Finance reported, the big moves were in single stocks. Ten of the 30 biggest movers at 3 p.m. ET had no company release at all, by our count, among them the biggest loser, Bicara Therapeutics, which closed down 44.2%.

LCI Industries, a supplier to the recreation and transportation markets, closed up 8.4%. It confirmed an unsolicited, non-binding cash offer of $101 a share, meaning no commitment yet, from Monomoy Capital Partners. Its closing price was 3.5% under that offer, by our calculation. LCI’s board still recommends the all-stock merger with Patrick Industries it agreed in June.

Wendy’s, which closed up 15.1%, confirmed the $7.35 a share cash proposal from Trian, Flynn Group, BlueFive Capital and Sixth Street. The filers put the price at about a 20% premium, meaning above Tuesday’s close, and Wendy’s closing price sat 3.8% under it, by our calculation.

Logitech and Robinhood fell after their own results. Logitech closed down 12.1%. Its holiday-quarter forecast includes a $70 million to $80 million hit from an incident that shut a chip supplier’s plant, by the company’s account. The plant opened again in September, and Logitech expects the impact to be largely resolved by its fiscal fourth quarter.

Robinhood closed down 3.3%. Its third-quarter report showed crypto revenue down 55% from a year earlier, while total revenue reached a record.

Why are AI infrastructure stocks up today

Makers of power gear and memory chips for data centers reported big orders or record sales overnight and this morning, and their shares rose. TE Connectivity and GE Vernova fell in regular trading, so the reports did not lift every supplier.

Vertiv makes the power and cooling equipment that keeps data center servers running. Its third-quarter sales rose 61%, and organic orders, which leave out acquisitions and currency swings, more than doubled from a year earlier. Chief executive Giordano Albertazzi said the industry is “in the middle of the largest infrastructure buildout,” and the company put a number on it by raising its sales forecast for the year by $650 million.

At its $243.12 close, the jump had added about $13.3 billion to Vertiv’s stock market value, by our estimate.

The memory makers moved together. SK hynix said quarterly revenue passed 100 trillion won for the first time, with operating profit equal to 80% of revenue. It expects demand for memory to outrun supply through 2030. Micron closed up 5.9%, according to StockTitan real-time Nasdaq data. Yahoo Finance reported that chip stocks kept rising after SK hynix’s report, with Micron and Samsung also higher. We covered the Korean results in our SK hynix earnings article.

Sellers of power equipment and services rose too, with Flex closing up 11.6% and ProPetro up 2.5%, according to StockTitan real-time Nasdaq data. Flex expects sales in its Cloud and Power Infrastructure segment, which it plans to spin off, to grow 75% to 85% this fiscal year. ProPetro, an oil and gas services company that also supplies power from natural gas generators, said that power business is negotiating several hundred megawatts of data center work.

Parts makers rose as well. Amphenol reported record orders and sales up 37% from a year earlier, leaving out acquisitions and currency swings. Its chief executive credited “continued exceptional organic growth in the IT datacom market,” meaning computer and data networking gear, and its shares closed up 3.5%. Ultra Clean, which supplies parts for chipmaking machines, closed up 8.5% after record quarterly revenue. Its chief executive said the company is positioning itself to gain from the chip industry’s AI-driven growth.

The power grid side reported as well. GE Vernova said third-quarter orders reached $29.3 billion, led by equipment for its Power business, and it agreed to acquire the grid equipment maker Trench Group for $9.0 billion. Its shares closed down 1.9%, according to StockTitan real-time Nasdaq data.

Not every supplier rose. TE Connectivity, whose chief executive tied its industrial growth to customers’ AI investments, reported orders up 29%. Its shares still closed down 1.9%, according to StockTitan real-time Nasdaq data.

Why are solar stocks down today

Enphase, which makes batteries and the small inverters that turn rooftop solar power into the current a home uses, said home solar demand is soft and forecast lower sales. SolarEdge, another solar equipment maker, closed down 8.3%, and we found no company release from it on StockTitan since Tuesday’s close.

Enphase said its US revenue rose about 3% from the second quarter, “a smaller than anticipated increase due to soft residential solar demand.”

Its forecast of $225 million to $255 million for the fourth quarter sits below the third quarter’s $293.3 million. The outlook also assumes that sell-through, meaning what the sellers of its products pass on to their own customers, will be 10% lower than in the third quarter.

Enphase was direct about why its home market is weak. “Our core U.S. residential solar market continues to face headwinds from higher interest rates and the expiration of the Section 25D federal tax credit,” the release said, referring to the federal tax credit for home solar. Higher rates make a rooftop system costlier to finance, in our reading; Wednesday’s decision left the Fed’s benchmark rate unchanged.

What to watch for the rest of the day

The evening’s big results are out, so Thursday’s economic data and the companies’ next steps are what comes next.

  • No date set: LCI’s board response to the Monomoy proposal, which LCI said it will give shareholders “in due course” (LCI Industries).
  • No date set: Wendy’s decision on the Trian proposal, which would come in a Wendy’s release or SEC filing. The company said it will not update until disclosure is appropriate (Wendy’s release).
  • December 8 and 9: the Fed’s next meeting, with its rate decision on December 9 (Federal Reserve calendar).
  • Thursday at 8:30 a.m. ET: third-quarter GDP and September personal income and spending, on our economic calendar and in our previews of third-quarter GDP and September PCE inflation.

  • 3.8%: how far Wendy’s closing price of $7.07 sat under the $7.35 proposal.
  • About $13.3 billion: our estimate of Vertiv’s added market value, from Tuesday’s $208.56 close to Wednesday’s $243.12 close, on about 385 million shares from StockTitan data.
