UnitedHealthcare Donates $1 Million to Nonprofits in Indiana

UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) company, is awarding $1 million in Empowering Health grants to five community-based organizations in Indiana to expand access to care and address the social determinants of health for uninsured individuals and underserved communities.

In total, UnitedHealthcare is donating $11.4 million through Empowering Health grants across 18 states and the District of Columbia. The grants will assist individuals and families experiencing challenges from food insecurity, social isolation and behavioral health issues, and support local health promotion and health literacy efforts.

Grant recipients in Indiana include:

• Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana – $300,000 to build the capacity of school-based pantries and support an at-home delivery program.
• Indiana Primary Health Care Association – $300,000 to implement and expand food access and education programming in partnership with six federally qualified health centers.
• Healthier Moms and Babies – $180,000 to expand the Prenatal Home Visitation Program for high-risk low-income families in Allen County. The home visitation program pairs experienced case managers with low-income women until their babies turn 2 years old to help mothers and their babies have the best possible start to their new lives.
• Indiana Rural Health Association – $150,000 to implement the Community Paramedicine Program, which addresses infant and maternal health disparities in Allen, Knox and Ripley counties.
• Girls on the Run of Northwest Indiana – $70,000 to expand social-emotional and physical activity programs, provide financial assistance to eligible girls, recruit new coaches and provide rural community outreach.

Good health encompasses more than simply visiting a doctor’s office. According to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, nearly 80% of what influences a person’s health relates to nonmedical issues, such as food, housing, transportation and the financial means to pay for basic daily needs. And for so many, the global pandemic has caused additional social and economic challenges that continue to affect healthy behaviors and exacerbate health disparities.

Since launching its Empowering Health commitment in 2018, UnitedHealthcare has now invested more than $40 million in Empowering Health grants reaching more than 6 million people through partnerships with community-based organizations in 29 states.
