Insights

Revenue Growth: The reported 80% year-over-year revenue growth is a significant indicator of the company's expanding market presence and operational scale. This outpaces typical industry growth rates and suggests that Symbotic Inc. is gaining market share or benefiting from increased demand for A.I.-enabled robotics in supply chain management. Investors should note this as a positive trend, reflecting the company's ability to capitalize on industry tailwinds.

Net Loss Reduction: The substantial reduction in net loss from $68 million to $13 million year-over-year demonstrates effective cost management and a path towards profitability. This is a crucial metric for stakeholders as it indicates financial stability and operational efficiency improvements. The trajectory towards profitability is often rewarded by the market through positive stock price movements.

Adjusted EBITDA: A positive adjusted EBITDA, in contrast to a loss in the previous year, is a robust measure of operational profitability. It excludes non-cash expenses and provides a clearer view of the company's underlying financial performance. The consistent positive adjusted EBITDA can be seen as a sign of healthy cash flow management, which is essential for future investments and debt servicing.

Market Position and Innovation: The emphasis on innovation and deployment capacity by the CEO suggests a strategic focus on maintaining competitive advantage. As supply chains increasingly rely on automation, Symbotic's A.I.-enabled robotics solutions are likely to see continued demand. The company's ability to innovate and deploy systems rapidly can be a key differentiator in the market, potentially leading to sustained growth.

Capital Reserves: The increase in cash reserves to $677 million provides the company with a solid liquidity position to support its growth initiatives. This financial cushion is vital for funding ongoing research and development, expanding deployment capabilities and ensuring operational resilience. For investors, this is an assurance of the company's ability to withstand market volatility and invest in long-term strategic goals.

Industry Implications: The performance of Symbotic Inc. can be seen as indicative of broader economic trends, such as the increasing integration of A.I. and robotics into the global supply chain. This technological shift may lead to greater efficiency and cost savings for businesses, potentially stimulating economic growth. However, it could also have implications for labor markets as automation may displace certain types of jobs.

Investment in Growth: The projected revenue for the upcoming quarter reflects management's confidence in continued demand for their products. The forecast is also a valuable signal for investors about the company's expectations for market conditions and internal performance. The guidance range provided offers insight into potential variability in performance, which could be due to factors such as sales cycles, deployment timelines, or market demand fluctuations.

USE OF NON-GAAP FINANCIAL INFORMATION

Symbotic reports its financial results in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles in the United States (“U.S. GAAP”). This press release contains financial measures that are not recognized under U.S. GAAP (“non-GAAP financial measures”), including adjusted EBITDA, adjusted gross profit and adjusted gross profit margin. These non-GAAP financial measures have limitations as an analytical tool as they do not have a standardized meaning prescribed by U.S. GAAP. The non-GAAP financial measures Symbotic uses may not be the same non-GAAP financial measures, and may not be calculated in the same manner, as that of other companies and, therefore, are unlikely to be comparable to similar measures presented by other companies. Rather, these non-GAAP financial measures are provided as a supplement to corresponding U.S. GAAP measures to provide additional information regarding the results of operations from management’s perspective. Accordingly, non-GAAP financial measures should not be considered a substitute for, in isolation from, or superior to, the financial information prepared and presented in accordance with U.S. GAAP. All non-GAAP financial measures presented in this press release are reconciled to their closest reported U.S. GAAP financial measures. Symbotic recommends that investors review the reconciliation of these non-GAAP financial measures to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measures provided in the financial statement tables included below in this press release, and not rely on any single financial measure to evaluate its business.

Symbotic defines adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP financial measure, as GAAP net loss excluding the following items: interest income; income taxes; depreciation and amortization; stock-based compensation; CEO transition charges; joint venture formation fees; and other non-recurring items that may arise from time to time. Symbotic defines adjusted gross profit, a non-GAAP financial measure, as GAAP gross profit excluding the following items: depreciation and stock-based compensation. Symbotic defines adjusted gross profit margin, a non-GAAP financial measure, as adjusted gross profit divided by revenue. In addition to Symbotic’s financial results determined in accordance with U.S. GAAP, Symbotic believes that adjusted EBITDA, adjusted gross profit and adjusted gross profit margin, non-GAAP financial measures, are useful in evaluating the performance of Symbotic’s business because they highlight trends in its core business.

Any financial projections in this press release or discussed in the webcast are forward-looking statements that are based on assumptions that are inherently subject to significant uncertainties and contingencies, many of which are beyond Symbotic’s control. While all projections are necessarily speculative, Symbotic believes that the preparation of prospective financial information involves increasingly higher levels of uncertainty the further out the projection extends from the date of preparation. 1 Adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) is a non-GAAP financial measure as defined below under “Use of Non-GAAP Financial Information.” See the tables below for reconciliations to net loss, the most comparable GAAP measure.
2 Symbotic is not providing guidance for net loss, which is the most comparable GAAP financial measure to adjusted EBITDA, because information reconciling forward-looking adjusted EBITDA to net loss is unavailable to it without unreasonable effort. Symbotic is not able to provide reconciliations of adjusted EBITDA to GAAP financial measures because certain items required for such reconciliations are outside of Symbotic’s control and/or cannot be reasonably predicted, such as the provision for stock-based compensation.
