Company named on selective list of finalists recognized for excellence in innovation and project management; winners to be announced later this month

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Suffolk, one of the largest and most innovative real estate and construction enterprises in the country, has announced that the company has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious 2023 Procore Groundbreaker Awards, in the categories of Project Excellence: General/Main/Head Contractor for its Boston University Center for Computing & Data Sciences, and Excellence in Innovation. The award winners in nine categories will be announced at Procore’s annual Groundbreak conference held at McCormick Place in Chicago on September 19 and 20, 2023.

“Suffolk is honored to be chosen as a finalist from among the many outstanding nominees in these categories,” said John Fish, Chairman and CEO of Suffolk. “Such recognition by our peers is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our employees and valued partners. Our mission is to redefine how America builds by remaining at the forefront of innovation and construction craftsmanship, and we are humbled to be represented as leaders in the field through this esteemed award program.”

The Excellence in Innovation Award celebrates a company that pushes the boundaries of construction technology. Suffolk’s nomination spotlights the organization’s goal to close the gap between the construction industry’s technology present and its potential. Suffolk has invested heavily in technology and data; for example, Suffolk leverages a Chief Data Officer, a unique position in the construction industry, and a dedicated team of 30 in-house data analysts who extract data from jobsites and continuously measure progress toward project goals, monitoring more than 500 data metrics via more than fifty operational intelligence dashboards.

Suffolk details its use of technology on jobsites, such as OpenSpace, a leader in 360-degree photo capture technology that affixes to a project team member’s hardhat to collect valuable visual data and comprehensive project documentation. Suffolk has also partnered with Newmetrix, formerly known as SmartVid and recently purchased by Oracle, to co-develop a predictive analytics solution to help manage safety risks on project sites. This solution leverages data pulled from Suffolk project sites and complex algorithms to assign a risk rating to jobsites that specifies how likely an incident is to occur based on certain conditions that have been observed to correlate with past incidents.

Suffolk’s position at the forefront of innovation is affirmed by its Suffolk Technologies group, a venture capital platform established by Suffolk in 2019 that is funding the next generation of companies solving challenges in the built environment. Suffolk Technologies invests in early and growth-stage startups transforming the built world across real estate and development, architecture, engineering and construction, property management, and smart cities. To date, Suffolk Technologies has backed 33 companies across automation and robotics, supply chain marketplace, sustainability, financial technology, and smart building themes.

Suffolk’s Boston University (BU) Center for Computing & Data Sciences was selected as a finalist for the Project Excellence: General/Main/Head Contractor award. This new 19-story, 350,000-square-foot iconic building on the Charles River Campus was completed in December 2022 and features a highly unique design by architecture firm KPMB, resembling a giant stack of books and featuring cantilevered sections rising above the campus. This LEED Platinum-certified building is the largest fossil-fuel-free building in Boston and one of the greenest buildings in New England. One of the most notable sustainable features of the building is its lack of connection to a gas line. Suffolk’s team drilled and installed a total of 31 geothermal bores, each 1,500 feet deep, which will harness the thermal capacity of the earth for heating and cooling.

The scale, design and location of the project presented a unique set of challenges. The mat slab placement was the third-largest single concrete pour in Massachusetts history, totaling 4500 yards and requiring 450 trucks over the course of twenty-four hours to complete. The building’s complex geometry presented logistical considerations relating to the location of its hoist, the timing of temporary steel removal and curtainwall installation, and complicated overhead façade work. The project team, in collaboration with Suffolk’s valued partners, successfully mitigated these challenges to deliver an innovative, state-of-the-art facility that will not only position BU for success in its Climate Action Plan, but also lead the national conversation about what is possible in the next frontier of sustainable construction.
