Owens Corning to Build New Shingle Plant in Southeastern U.S.
Owens Corning (NYSE: OC) has announced plans to build a new shingle manufacturing facility in the southeastern United States, expanding its production capacity to meet growing demand. The new plant will feature a four-wide laminator capable of producing approximately 6 million squares per year, with production expected to begin in 2027.
The facility will manufacture high-performing shingles, including the Duration® series featuring patented SureNail® technology. The plant will employ advanced automation technology and create nearly 100 skilled manufacturing jobs. The specific location will be announced later this year.
This expansion follows previous investments in process improvements and automation across the network, including the addition of laminate capabilities at the Medina, Ohio facility, expected online mid-year. These combined previous investments will provide capacity comparable to the new southeastern plant's volume.

Several key factors make this investment particularly compelling:
- The Southeast location optimizes logistics costs and delivery times in a high-growth region with strong construction activity and frequent weather-related roof replacement needs
- The four-wide laminator technology and advanced automation align with industry-best manufacturing practices, likely improving margins through operational efficiency
- The timing (2027 production start) suggests confidence in sustained demand growth, particularly in premium products featuring proprietary technologies like SureNail®
When combined with the Medina facility upgrade and other network improvements, Owens Corning is effectively adding the equivalent of two new plants' worth of capacity. This aggressive expansion indicates strong market fundamentals in residential roofing and positions the company to capture additional market share while maintaining pricing power through premium product offerings.
The investment's strategic value extends beyond pure capacity addition - it modernizes the manufacturing footprint, reduces distribution costs and creates operational flexibility to meet regional demand fluctuations. These advantages should translate into sustained competitive benefits and margin expansion opportunities.
