High preterm birth rate underscores the importance of continuing education on the care of premature and critically ill newborns

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Pediatrix Medical Group, Inc. (NYSE: MD), the nation’s leading provider of highly specialized health care for women, children and babies, will host the top meetings in neonatal-perinatal medicine Feb. 19-24 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Specialty Review in Neonatology and NEO: The Conference for Neonatology will take place concurrently, each addressing many of the most critical and controversial issues that influence the clinical practice of neonatal-perinatal medicine today. The meetings will host more than 600 combined attendees comprising neonatologists, neonatology fellows, pediatricians, advanced practice nurses and other allied health professionals, in addition to exhibitors and sponsors.

As a trusted provider of neonatology services for 45 years, Pediatrix cares for nearly a quarter of infants born in the U.S. that require intensive care.

The 2023 March of Dimes Report Card on U.S. maternal and infant health, released in November, reported that the nation’s preterm birth rate remains high. The rate of babies born before 37 weeks' gestation was 10.4% in 2022. Between 2012 and 2017, the prematurity rate was less than 10%. Since 2018, the prematurity rate has increased.

“This data underscores how crucial it is that we continue to enhance clinical expertise for the care of our most vulnerable patients – premature and critically ill infants,” said Curtis Pickert, M.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Pediatrix. “Through our vast research efforts and continuing education opportunities like Specialty Review and NEO, we are advancing the field of neonatal-perinatal medicine as part of our ongoing commitment to improving outcomes.”

The six-day course, co-directed by David Weisoly, D.O., FAAP, neonatologist in Houston, Texas and Matthew Saxonhouse, M.D., associate professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine Charlotte in North Carolina, will feature a top-tier lineup of speakers known for their excellence in teaching and field expertise.

NEO: The Conference for Neonatology | Feb. 21-23

Now in its 45th year, NEO is recognized as the foremost meeting of its kind in the U.S. Led by Reese H. Clark, M.D., Senior Vice President of Clinical Research, Education, Quality and Safety and Executive Director of CREQS, and Timothy Biela, M.D., neonatologist and medical director at Pediatrix Neonatology of San Antonio, NEO continues its longstanding tradition of providing the latest information on key areas of neonatal management. Over the course of three days, a distinguished panel of speakers comprised of Pediatrix-affiliated physicians and well-known faculty from top institutions nationwide will present on optimal approaches in the neonatal intensive care unit.

A highly anticipated event on the agenda each year is the presentation of the Legends in Neonatology award. Established in 2007, the award honors remarkable individuals whose clinical contributions have helped forge new ground in neonatal medicine. This year’s recipient is Wanda D. Barfield, M.D., MPH, director of the division of reproductive health (DRH) within the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Barfield has dedicated her life to maternal and infant health through improving access to risk-appropriate perinatal services and advancing the quality of women’s maternal and child health data for public health action. In addition to her role at DRH, she is a practicing neonatologist and serves as an associate professor of pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University and as an adjunct assistant professor at Emory University School of Medicine.
