SEWICKLEY, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- On Monday, September 25, 2023, the United Steel Workers (USW) announced that International President Tom Conway had died. Esmark, Inc. Founder, Chairman and CEO James P. Bouchard expresses his and the company’s deepest sorrow at the unexpected loss of one of the steel industry’s most reputable leaders.

“I’ve known and worked with Tom since the 1990s, and while the industry has lost a devout leader and advocate, I have lost a dear friend,” said Bouchard. “From his earliest days in the USW to present day, Tom fought for every worker in every city at every company, and he did so with transparency and respect for all.”

Esmark, Inc.’s Illinois and Ohio facilities, and respective employees, are USW unions.

“Over the last few decades, Tom and I worked closely together to ensure that our people were taken care of, and that hard work led to a strong friendship,“ Bouchard continued. “We were just texting last month regarding our mutual respect for each other and our close working relationship and friendship. Our hearts go out to Tom’s family, the USW, and all USW steelworkers.”

Complete final texts between Bouchard and Conway:

Bouchard: “We will remain friends despite the outcome !! I actually enjoy meeting with Leo, Dave, and you in person = you are good people !!”
