Boeing Reports Fourth Quarter Results
- Boeing's delivery of 157 commercial airplanes and recording 611 net orders in the fourth quarter of 2023 indicates strong demand for their products.
- The full-year results show a 17% increase in revenues, reaching $77.8 billion, and a 70% increase in operating cash flow, totaling $6.0 billion.
- The company's total backlog grew to $520 billion, reflecting a robust pipeline of future orders and a strong market position.
- Boeing reported a net loss of $30 million in the fourth quarter of 2023, with a negative operating margin of 1.3% and core operating earnings of $90 million.
- The financial data also revealed a core loss per share (non-GAAP) of $0.47 in the fourth quarter, indicating a negative bottom-line performance.
- Despite the increase in operating cash flow, the company's free cash flow (non-GAAP) decreased by 5% compared to the previous year, reaching $4.4 billion.
Insights
The recent financial results from the company indicate a significant improvement in their operational performance. Despite a net loss, the increase in revenue by 10% in Q4 and 17% for the full year, along with the growth in operating cash flow by 70% from the previous year, suggests a robust demand for commercial airplanes. This is further evidenced by the increased backlog to $520 billion, which includes a substantial number of commercial airplane orders.
Investors should note the company's strategic actions to enhance quality, such as the pause in 737 production to focus on quality and the appointment of an external expert to assess the quality management system. These actions may indicate a proactive approach to addressing production issues, which could improve long-term reliability and customer satisfaction.
The reported free cash flow (non-GAAP) of $3.0 billion for Q4 and $4.4 billion for the full year reflects the company's ability to generate cash after capital expenditures. This is a critical metric for investors as it provides insight into the company's financial health and its capacity to reduce debt, pay dividends, or reinvest in its operations. The decrease in net loss year-over-year may also be seen as a positive sign of recovery, although the company still faces challenges in achieving profitability.
It is important to consider the company's debt levels, which have remained stable at $52.3 billion. This stability, alongside the increase in cash and marketable securities to $16.0 billion, may provide the company with financial flexibility in the near term. However, the long-term debt obligations will require careful management, especially in the context of the capital-intensive nature of the aerospace industry.
The increase in commercial airplane deliveries and orders highlights a rebound in the aerospace sector, likely driven by the recovery of the travel industry post-pandemic. The production rates for the 737 and 787 programs are particularly noteworthy, as they reflect the company's response to market demand. However, the operating margins remain low and the report of losses in certain fixed-price development programs within the Defense, Space & Security segment could be a concern.
The company's efforts in certification flight testing for the 737-10 and the resumption of production on the 777X program are indicative of its commitment to innovation and meeting future demand. However, the impact of the Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 accident on the 737-9 and subsequent actions taken by the company will be critical to monitor, as they could affect customer confidence and future orders.

The company continues to cooperate transparently with the FAA following the Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 accident involving a 737-9. The company has also appointed an outside expert to lead an in-depth independent assessment of Commercial Airplanes' quality management system, with recommendations provided directly to Calhoun and the Aerospace Safety Committee of Boeing's Board of Directors.
The 737 program continues to deliver airplanes and its production rate is now at 38 per month. The 787 program production rate is now at five per month.

Core Operating Earnings/(loss), Core Operating Margin and Core Earnings/(loss) Per Share
Core operating earnings/(loss) is defined as GAAP Earnings/(loss) from operations excluding the FAS/CAS service cost adjustment. The FAS/CAS service cost adjustment represents the difference between the Financial Accounting Standards (FAS) pension and postretirement service costs calculated under GAAP and costs allocated to the business segments. Core operating margin is defined as Core operating earnings/(loss) expressed as a percentage of revenue. Core earnings/(loss) per share is defined as GAAP Diluted earnings/(loss) per share excluding the net earnings/(loss) per share impact of the FAS/CAS service cost adjustment and Non-operating pension and postretirement expenses. Non-operating pension and postretirement expenses represent the components of net periodic benefit costs other than service cost. Pension costs allocated to BDS and BGS businesses supporting government customers are computed in accordance with
Free Cash Flow
Free cash flow is GAAP operating cash flow reduced by capital expenditures for property, plant and equipment. Management believes free cash flow provides investors with an important perspective on the cash available for shareholders, debt repayment, and acquisitions after making the capital investments required to support ongoing business operations and long term value creation. Free cash flow does not represent the residual cash flow available for discretionary expenditures as it excludes certain mandatory expenditures such as repayment of maturing debt. Management uses free cash flow as a measure to assess both business performance and overall liquidity. See Table 2 on page 2 for reconciliation of free cash flow to GAAP operating cash flow.
