Insights

AMC's multi-million dollar seating renovations at Empire 25 and Lincoln Square 13 represent a tactical operational enhancement at two critical revenue-generating theaters. The 4,000+ new AMC Club Rocker seats installed across these locations introduce 23% wider seating with premium leather-like material without sacrificing significant capacity - a key differentiator from previous seating upgrades.

The operational timing is particularly strategic, with renovations completing April 14, 2025, just before the summer blockbuster season when theater attendance traditionally peaks. By upgrading these specific locations, which CEO Aron identified as being among AMC's top three highest-grossing theaters nationwide, the company is prioritizing enhancements where they can potentially deliver maximum impact.

What's most notable is AMC's targeted approach to customer experience improvements. Rather than implementing across all locations simultaneously, they've piloted these upgrades at their highest-traffic theaters (starting with Burbank 16 in summer 2024), likely using these locations as proving grounds before broader rollout. This methodical approach to operational improvements allows for measuring customer satisfaction impact before committing to wider implementation.

The additional enhancements at Lincoln Square 13 - including up to 10 inches of extra legroom, new flooring, and upgraded speakers - create a more comprehensive refresh of the theatrical experience beyond just seating comfort. Combined with existing premium format offerings (IMAX, Dolby Cinema) and Laser at AMC projection technology, these renovations maintain these locations' position as showcase venues within AMC's portfolio.

This seating renovation initiative reveals AMC's balanced approach to capital allocation during challenging times for theatrical exhibitors. By targeting multi-million dollar upgrades at their highest-performing theaters rather than chain-wide implementation, management demonstrates disciplined investment prioritization focused on protecting and enhancing their most valuable assets.

The strategic insight here is AMC's evolution in premium seating strategy. Previous comfort-focused upgrades required significant capacity reductions, making them impractical for these high-volume locations. The new AMC Club Rockers represent a middle-ground solution that enhances customer experience without sacrificing the seating density critical to these theaters' financial performance during peak periods.

CEO Aron's statement highlighting "dramatically improved guest satisfaction scores" provides a key performance indicator the company is tracking, suggesting these renovations are being measured against specific customer experience metrics rather than just aesthetic improvements. The direct correlation he draws between these upgraded theaters and their status as highest-grossing locations indicates management sees a relationship between seating quality and revenue performance.

The company's identification of "several additional high-traffic AMC theatres" for future Club Rocker installations signals a measured expansion based on initial performance data. This incremental approach to capital improvements allows AMC to spread investment costs while focusing on venues most likely to deliver returns through enhanced customer experience.

While these renovations don't fundamentally alter AMC's core business challenges, they demonstrate management's continued focus on operational excellence and premium positioning within the theatrical exhibition space.

The all-new AMC Club Rocker seats feature leather-like plush material and a wider seat by up to 23%

The new AMC Club Rocker seats are now available in all traditional, non-Premium Large Format auditoriums at both locations

Most reseated auditoriums at AMC Lincoln Square 13 also feature up to 10 inches of additional leg room, along with new flooring and new speakers in all traditional auditoriums

LEAWOOD, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- AMC Theatres® (NYSE:AMC), the largest theatrical exhibitor in the United States and the world, today announced that two of its national flagship locations, AMC Empire 25 and AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City, have officially completed seven-month, multi-million dollar seating upgrades. In all, more than 4,000 AMC Club Rockers combined, as well as new flooring, were installed in all traditional, non-Premium Large Format auditoriums at the two locations.

AMC Club Rockers feature a wider seat by up to 23%, and replace the previous fabric-material chairs with leather-like plush to give guests a more comfortable moviegoing experience. In the non-PLF auditoriums at AMC Lincoln Square 13, the new AMC Club Rockers were installed in most auditoriums with up to 10 inches of additional leg room, and the speakers were replaced to deliver high-quality surround sound.

Creating a better moviegoing experience through more comfortable seating has been a core element of AMC’s strategy for more than a decade. Previous iterations of upgraded seating, which required a significant decrease to capacity, were not feasible at AMC’s highest attended theatres. The installation of the AMC Club Rockers at AMC Lincoln Square 13 and AMC Empire 25 mark the second and third locations in AMC’s U.S. circuit to switch to the wider, more comfortable seat from the traditional cloth chairs. AMC Club Rockers were first installed in AMC Burbank 16 in the Los Angeles market in the summer of 2024. These three locations are regularly in the top 10 for domestic attendance, and these new seats make the moviegoing experience even more comfortable and enjoyable for guests, without eliminating significant seating capacity.

AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron commented:

“The introduction of the new AMC Club Rocker seat, now at AMC Lincoln Square 13 and AMC Empire 25 in Manhattan, along with AMC Burbank 16 in the Los Angeles market, has led to dramatically improved guest satisfaction scores. It was only a few weeks ago that out of the nearly 540 theaters in the entire United States under the AMC brand, our three highest grossing theaters were Burbank, Lincoln Square, and Empire – the very three theaters where we installed these new luxurious, leathery rocking seats. With such positive moviegoer feedback and response, we have identified several additional high-traffic AMC theatres to bring these new AMC Club Rockers to our guests.”

This seating renovation project began in early September 2024. AMC Lincoln Square completed its renovation in November 2024. The project officially wrapped up at AMC Empire 25 on Monday, April 14, 2025— just in time for moviegoers to enjoy spring and summer box office hits.

At both AMC Empire 25 and AMC Lincoln Square 13, all non-PLF auditoriums feature spectacular Laser at AMC projection, which makes features better brightness, crystal-clear contrast and unbelievable color on every movie presentation. In addition, AMC Empire 25 and AMC Lincoln Square 13 feature multiple premium large format screens, like IMAX at AMC, Dolby Cinema at AMC, and PRIME at AMC – all of which feature pristine laser projection.
