VMware Named a Leader in Inaugural Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Container Management for its Tanzu Portfolio
- VMware positioned as a Leader in Gartner Magic Quadrant for Container Management
- Interest in hybrid and multi-cloud use cases is growing
- VMware offers heterogeneous integration and lifecycle management support for Amazon EKS clusters
- VMware Tanzu platform accelerates application delivery, reduces administration costs by up to 80%
- None.
VMware Tanzu Positioned as a Leader for Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision
VMware’s hybrid infrastructure and operational tooling was also highlighted as contributing factors for strong capabilities in cluster fleet management.
Gartner sees that interest in hybrid and multi-cloud use cases is growing. The broader public cloud focus has evolved into a hybrid (in some cases, distributed) and/or multi-cloud discussion in which most enterprises are open to using multiple cloud environments. Management solutions offer the ability to operationalize management across these different cloud environments through a multi-environment control panel. Additionally, public cloud vendors are offering container management software that can be deployed in a variety of environments. These offerings initially targeted more of a hybrid than multi-cloud model (that is, extending their technology from the cloud to on-premises).
“We are delighted to have been named a Leader in the inaugural Gartner Magic Quadrant for Container Management. We feel the fact that Gartner recognizes VMware for its Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision is a great validation. VMware offers heterogeneous integration to help our customers become ‘cloud smart’ and the lifecycle management support for Amazon EKS clusters was cited as a good example of that heterogeneous integration. We are excited to offer even more options to our customers today in concert with the fact that Gartner sees the interest in hybrid and multi-cloud use cases growing,” said Purnima Padmanabhan, senior vice president and general manager, Modern Applications and Management Business Group, VMware.
VMware Tanzu is a platform designed to accelerate application delivery providing developers, platform, and operations teams with the ability to develop, operate, and optimize applications across clouds. VMware Tanzu's modularity and support for open interfaces allow organizations to deliver unique and varied outcomes for their business as they manage vast applications and environments and are able to reduce administration costs by up to 80 percent with robust multi-cluster, multi-cloud Kubernetes management.(1) For Kubernetes operations, VMware simplifies container provisioning, managing, monitoring, and observability, automating operations at scale, and better securing environments by default with common data and insights to enable continuous improvement.
Gartner defines container management as offerings that enable the deployment and operation of containerized workloads. Delivery methods include cloud, managed service, and software. Container management may be required for containers running on-premises, in the public cloud, at the edge, or a combination thereof. Associated technologies include service mesh, orchestration and scheduling, service discovery and registration, image registry, routing, and networking, service catalog and management user interface, and API.
The critical capabilities taken into consideration when evaluating vendors for the Magic Quadrant placement were:
- Container management software deployment Use Case
- Public cloud container management deployment Use Case
- Hybrid deployment Use Case
- Self-management tooling Use Case
- Edge container management deployment Use Case
- Serverless containers deployment Use Case
For this research, we believe Gartner assesses Tanzu Application Platform, Tanzu Mission Control, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, Tanzu Service Mesh, VMware Application Catalog, VMware Aria Operations, and Aria Operations for Applications (formerly Wavefront).
