Insights
The reported net income growth of 105.1% and core net income increase of 77.2% for the fourth quarter are significant indicators of the company's robust performance and efficiency in capital management. The notable rise in diluted EPS reflects a strong earnings trajectory, which is likely to be well-received by investors and could positively influence the stock price of Velocity Financial, Inc. The increase in loan production and the improvement in net interest margins suggest an adept response to the challenging interest rate environment, indicating a strategic advantage in pricing power and asset-liability management.
Furthermore, the decrease in nonperforming loans as a percentage of HFI loans implies effective credit risk management, which is essential for maintaining loan portfolio health. The company's capital raise and its deployment into accretive investments signal a proactive approach to growth, aligning with the '5X25' strategic goal. These factors combined could potentially lead to an uptick in investor confidence and a positive reevaluation of the company's future earnings potential.
The year-over-year loan production growth, particularly in the Investor 1-4 Rental and Warehouse property segments, highlights a strong demand for business-purpose loans. This demand is likely driven by a combination of macroeconomic factors and the company's targeted growth strategies. The increase in both loan production volume and weighted average coupon (WAC) suggests that Velocity is not only expanding its lending activities but also doing so at higher yields, which is crucial in a rising interest rate environment.
Velocity's focus on business-purpose loans, a niche market segment, may provide a competitive edge and diversification benefits. The reported gains from loan disposition activities and the successful execution of securitizations further underscore the company's operational prowess. The positive resolution rates of nonperforming loans (NPLs) may also reassure investors about the company's asset quality and recovery capabilities.
The adoption of fair value accounting for new loan originations as of October 1, 2022, has introduced a new dynamic into the company's financial reporting. The fair value option can lead to increased volatility in reported earnings due to changes in market conditions, which may affect the valuation of loans and securitized debt. Investors and analysts should be aware of these accounting changes and consider the impact on comparability with prior periods. Moreover, the company's compliance with regulatory requirements and the management of legal risks associated with loan servicing and securitization activities are critical for sustaining its growth trajectory and avoiding potential legal entanglements that could adversely affect its financial position.

About Velocity Financial, Inc.
Based in
Non-GAAP Financial Measures
To supplement our financial statements presented in accordance with
Non-GAAP core net income and non-GAAP core diluted EPS are non-GAAP financial measures that represent our net income (loss) and net income (loss) per diluted share, adjusted to eliminate the effect of certain costs incurred from activities that are not normal recurring operating expenses, such as COVID-stressed charges and recoveries of loan loss provision, nonrecurring debt amortization, the impact of operational measures taken to address the COVID-19 pandemic and workforce reduction costs, and costs associated with acquisitions. To calculate non-GAAP core diluted EPS, we use the weighted-average number of shares of common stock outstanding that is used to calculate net income per diluted share under GAAP.
We have included non-GAAP core net income and non-GAAP core diluted EPS because they are key measures used by our management to evaluate our operating performance, generate future operating plans, and make strategic decisions, including those relating to operating expenses and the allocation of internal resources. Accordingly, we believe that non-GAAP core net income and non-GAAP core diluted EPS provide useful information to investors and others in understanding and evaluating our operating results in the same manner as our management and board of directors. In addition, they provide useful measures for period-to-period comparisons of our business, as they remove the effect of certain items that we expect to be nonrecurring.
These non-GAAP financial measures should not be considered in isolation from, or as a substitute for, financial information prepared in accordance with GAAP. These non-GAAP financial measures are not based on any standardized methodology prescribed by GAAP and are not necessarily comparable to similarly titled measures presented by other companies.
For more information on Core Income, please refer to the section of this press release below titled “Adjusted Financial Metric Reconciliation to GAAP Net Income” at the end of this press release.
