Schneider Electric has announced a new patent leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance process safety and reduce industrial hazards. The innovation automatically analyzes potential process hazards and validates protection mechanisms in industrial processes. The technology, developed by the EcoStruxure™ Triconex Safety team, enables automatic hazard prevention through protective mechanisms.
The patent represents a significant advancement in functional safety, allowing for the simulation of hazards under various conditions and the generation of protective responses. Three additional patents incorporating AI into functional safety lifecycle are pending. The system aims to enhance HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) studies by generating more comprehensive scenario combinations than previously possible through manual analysis.

This patent is a part of a strategic initiative to enhance functional safety using AI. It is now possible to simulate hazards, with varying conditions, and then attempt to prevent dangerous conditions by using a process hazard analysis tool to generate protective mechanisms to the process. Three other Schneider Electric patents incorporating AI into functional safety lifecycle are currently pending. News of the innovation comes as there is a growing interest in combining human ingenuity in functional safety analysis with strategic implementation of reenforced learning to prevent hazardous scenarios in industrial automation.
