Markel names Steve Girard, Regional President, Southeast region
Markel Corporation (NYSE: MKL) announces the appointment of Steve Girard as the new Regional President for the Southeast region of Markel Specialty, succeeding Nick Abraham, who has left the company for another opportunity. Girard, previously the Mid-Atlantic Regional President, has a history of delivering strong, profitable growth since joining Markel in 2008. He will continue to report to Sarah Gavlick, Chief Territory Officer, and will be based in Alpharetta, Georgia.

RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 9, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Markel Corporation (NYSE: MKL) announced today that Steve Girard has been named Regional President, Southeast region for Markel Specialty. Girard, who currently serves as Regional President of the Mid-Atlantic region, replaces Nick Abraham, who decided to leave Markel for another opportunity.
"Steve took the helm of our newly created Mid-Atlantic region four years ago and all he and his team did was deliver consecutive years of strong, profitable growth," said Sarah Gavlick, Chief Territory Officer, East, Markel Specialty. Girard joined Markel in 2008 in the Southeast region as Managing Director, Production and Underwriting. He was named Southeast Regional President in 2011. In 2017, Markel expanded its regional model from five to six regions, and Girard was named Mid-Atlantic Regional President.
Prior to Markel, he served in various senior management roles with CNA Re, W.R. Berkley, and Willis Re. Steve began his career in 1985 with General Reinsurance as a casualty facultative underwriter. During those 15 years, he spent one year with Markel in 1990 when it acquired the second half of Shand and the Rhulen Agency which became the basis for Markel Insurance Company.
Girard will continue reporting to Gavlick and will be based in Markel's Alpharetta, Georgia office.
