SEOUL, South Korea, Sept. 9, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- KT Corporation (KRX: 030200; NYSE: KT), South Korea's largest telecommunications company, won the Greatest 5G Innovation and Telecom Service Innovation categories in annual awards honoring the best telecom companies in the world.

The recognition came at the 11th annual awards ceremony of Informa Telecoms & Media, a London-based ICT research organization. The coveted global awards cite companies which have displayed extraordinary achievements and innovations. There are 14 categories in telecommunications technologies and services, and network control, automation and security.

The 5G World 2020 Awards reaffirmed KT's prowess as a global leader in the next-generation information and communications technology. In addition to Telecom Service Innovation and Greatest 5G Innovation, KT's operations were high enough to earn nominations in five other categories, including the Most Successful 5G Consumer Service, Most Innovative 5G Enterprise Partnership/Trial and Best Network Automation Technology.

"The 5G World 2020 Awards mark a momentous achievement of KT gaining recognition on the global stage by combining its 5G service capability and technological expertise," said Jeon Hong-Beom, KT's senior executive vice president and head of the company's AI/DX Convergence Business Group. "In the post-pandemic era of non-contact lifestyles, KT will continue to introduce heartwarming, humanitarian services and technologies, such as digital healthcare, spearheading changes in people's daily lives and industrial innovations.

In the 5G World 2019 Awards, KT swept four categories – Best 5G International Commercial Launch, Telecom Service Innovation, Best Network Automation Technology and Greatest 5G Innovation – the most among Korean telecommunications companies. KT also won 5G Leadership in the World Communication Awards, given by London-based Total Telecom, in 2018 and 2019.

In the Greatest 5G Innovation award for 2020 KT was honored for its Cloud Autonomous Driving. The category selects the most innovative product that can lead the 5G industry through the use of new technologies and services in next-generation networks.

KT's Cloud Autonomous Driving, developed as part of the government-initiated "Giga KOREA" project, enables real-time self-driving by uploading in real time the vehicle sensor data to KT's cloud platform and delivering the platform's control information to the vehicle. This is a new service created by integrating network slicing and edge computing to self-driving. It satisfies the requirements for driverless driving through arithmetic operation performed by the platform, instead of vehicles.

KT's Global Epidemic Prevention Platform (GEPP) earned it the Telecom Service Innovation award this year. The category brings to light outstanding novel solutions for resolving social issues by means of innovative service using mobile technology, which can be easily benchmarked by peer companies.

The judging criteria for the Telecom Service Innovation award were "technological innovativeness," "contribution to resolution of social issues," and the "timeliness and appropriateness of technology" for application by other industries.

KT's Global Epidemic Prevention Platform is a solution for informing visitors to countries affected by contagious diseases of infection risk and assisting health authorities in risk monitoring by using communication Big Data technology.

Since 2016, KT and the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have jointly promoted the use of GEPP within Korea under the name of "Smart Quarantine Service." In 2018, their collaboration proved instrumental for the Korean government's response to MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). In 2019, KT introduced GEPP in Kenya, Laos and Ghana, successfully proving the solution's potentiality for contribution to prevention of infectious diseases and its expanded applications.

In particular, when the COVID-19 pandemic spread to Korea this year, KT provided essential assistance to the Korean government in case investigation and contact tracing of potential virus carriers. KT's substantial contribution to curbing the pandemic's transmission via its mobile solution earned the company the prestigious award in the category of Telecom Service Innovation.
