First Merchants Corporation Announces First Quarter 2021 Earnings per Share
First Merchants Corporation (NASDAQ - FRME) reported a strong performance for Q1 2021, with net income of $49.5 million, up from $34.3 million the previous year. Earnings per share increased by 47% to $.91. Total assets reached $14.6 billion, with loans at $9.3 billion, boosted by $742 million in Paycheck Protection Program loans. Deposits rose by 21.1% to $12.0 billion. However, non-interest income decreased by $5.7 million. The return on assets was 1.39%, with a net interest margin of 3.23%.

On January 1, 2021, the Corporation adopted the current expected credit losses (“CECL”) model for calculating the allowance for credit losses. The impact of the adoption was an increase to Allowance for Credit Losses – Loans of

Our first quarter results were strong and I’m especially pleased to have produced a return on assets of 1.39 percent, return on tangible common equity of 15.87 percent and efficiency ratio of 50.23 percent. The effective tax rate was 15.3 percent in the first quarter of 2021, compared to 9.2 percent in the first quarter of 2020. These ratios reflect the Corporation’s strong liquidity and capital positions.
