Insights

United Rentals, Inc.'s introduction of a next-generation access management solution represents a strategic move to enhance its product portfolio in the equipment rental market. The integration of RFID technology for jobsite and equipment access is indicative of the company's commitment to innovation, aligning with industry trends toward digital transformation and smart jobsite management. This solution stands to improve operational efficiency and safety, which are critical factors in the construction and industrial sectors.

From a market perspective, the adoption of such technologies can be a differentiator, potentially increasing United Rentals' competitive advantage. The ability to offer a seamless, integrated access management system may lead to increased customer loyalty and attract new clients looking for advanced safety and efficiency solutions. Analyzing the potential market impact, one can anticipate that if widely adopted, this technology could set a new standard in the industry, prompting competitors to follow suit or risk obsolescence.

The emphasis on safety and security through the implementation of RFID badges for access management aligns with the growing regulatory and societal focus on workplace safety. By enhancing visibility and control over jobsite access, United Rentals is addressing key concerns such as unauthorized site entry and equipment misuse, which can lead to accidents and operational disruptions. It is essential to recognize the potential reduction in liability risks and insurance costs that could result from fewer onsite incidents.

Furthermore, the compatibility with third-party workforce management solutions suggests a versatile approach that could facilitate industry-wide adoption. The ability to integrate with existing systems lowers the barrier to entry for clients, potentially leading to a standardization of safety practices across different jobsites. This proactive approach to safety and compliance could serve as a model for the industry, potentially influencing future safety regulations.

The deployment of a cloud-based worksite management platform, Total Control®, which connects jobsite access with equipment access management, showcases United Rentals' investment in cloud computing and big data analytics. The real-time and historical insights into equipment usage provided by this platform could lead to data-driven decision-making, optimizing asset utilization and reducing idle time.

The discussion around telematics-enabled equipment—a term referring to the integrated use of telecommunications and informatics—highlights the company's push towards IoT (Internet of Things) in industrial operations. The management of over 360,000 telematics-enabled pieces of equipment reflects a significant scale of digital infrastructure. This level of digital integration could provide United Rentals with detailed operational data, enabling predictive maintenance and improved asset lifecycle management.

Solution Improves Safety, Security and Productivity

STAMFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- United Rentals, Inc. (NYSE: URI), the world's largest equipment rental company, today announced a next-generation access management solution that seamlessly manages jobsite and equipment access through RFID badges. This single-badge, multi-use solution can increase jobsite visibility and control for safer, more efficient operations.

Next-generation access management is compatible with a variety of third-party workforce management solutions that register workers and issue RFID badges for site entry. Once connected, workers are authenticated for entry at jobsite turnstiles and vehicle access control points. United Rentals has next-generation access management solutions available for rent as part of our one-stop site mobilization solution that includes fencing, restrooms, offices, and temporary power. The same RFID badge can be used for equipment access management, where access control keypads are installed, creating a seamless end-to-end access management solution. This new solution augments United Rentals’ PIN code-based equipment access solutions, which are already available on thousands of rental units.

“Our Next-Generation Access Management Solution connects workers and equipment to help our customers work more safely, productively, and sustainably,” said Tony Leopold, Senior Vice President of Strategy & Digital, United Rentals. “We are differentiating our offerings by connecting and managing data from the world’s largest fleet of over 360K telematics-enabled pieces of equipment.”

United Rentals' cloud-based worksite management platform, Total Control®, connects jobsite access with equipment access management through user profile data. Users can also view real-time and historical insights into equipment usage.

“Access management has become a key component of jobsite safety and productivity, especially as we see projects and teams growing larger and more complex,” said Mike Durand, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, United Rentals. “We’re committed to helping our customers Work United through innovative solutions like Access Management.”
