Insights

The launch of XDEMVY and its subsequent $14.7 million in net product sales within the first four months is a clear indicator of the product's market acceptance. With over 17,400 bottles delivered to patients and adoption by approximately 6,000 Eye Care Providers, these figures demonstrate a successful commercial strategy. The high initial sales volume suggests a strong market demand for treatments in the Demodex blepharitis space, which is important for investors gauging the potential revenue growth and market share capture of Tarsus Pharmaceuticals.

However, the reported net loss of $41.9 million for the fourth quarter and $135.9 million for the full year, shows a significant increase in spending, primarily in R&D and SG&A, as the company scales its operations. This can be a point of concern for investors looking at the company's profitability trajectory. The increase in non-cash stock compensation, part of the SG&A expenses, also reflects a growing investment in human capital, which may pay off in the long term but currently adds to the net loss.

The advancement of Tarsus Pharmaceuticals' clinical pipeline, including positive proof-of-concept results across the entire portfolio, is a promising sign for future product development and diversification. The positive top-line data from the Phase 2a clinical trials for treatments of Meibomian Gland Disease and Papulopustular Rosacea, along with the prevention of Lyme disease, indicate a robust research and development framework. This could potentially lead to multiple revenue streams in the future, mitigating risks associated with reliance on a single product.

From a medical research perspective, the statistically significant improvements in inflammatory lesions and Investigator's Global Assessment scores are crucial. These results not only validate the efficacy of the treatments but also enhance the credibility of the company's R&D capabilities. For investors, the progression of these trials and the potential for FDA approval are critical milestones that could have a substantial impact on the company's valuation and market position.

With Tarsus Pharmaceuticals' strategic deployment of an experienced sales force to target a significant percentage of Eye Care Providers, the company is demonstrating an understanding of the importance of market penetration and brand establishment. The emphasis on disease education leading to provider adoption is a key marketing strategy that appears to be paying dividends, as evidenced by the more than 50% of ECPs prescribing XDEMVY to multiple patients.

The investment community should note the aggressive marketing and sales approach, as it is likely to continue driving prescription growth. However, it is essential to monitor the sustainability of these strategies in the face of potential competition and market saturation. Long-term success will depend on maintaining growth momentum and effectively managing the associated costs.

Fourth Quarter 2023 Financial Results

  • Fourth quarter revenues were $13.1 million, driven by XDEMVY net product sales.
  • Cost of sales were $1.2 million, due to manufacturing costs incurred after the approval of XDEMVY, the royalty we pay on net product sales and the amortization of the $4.0 million approval milestone we paid to our licensor and are amortizing over a 10-year period.
  • Research and development (R&D) expenses were $13.3 million in the fourth quarter, compared to $10.0 million in the same period last year. Total R&D non-cash stock compensation expense incurred was $1.5 million in the fourth quarter, compared with $1.1 million in the same period last year.
  • Selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses were $43.0 million in the fourth quarter compared to $14.6 million in the same period last year. The increase was due primarily to $11.7 million of increased payroll and personnel-related costs, $7.7 million of increased commercial costs related to the commercial launch of XDEMVY, $5.1 million of increased office and administrative expenses and $3.6 million of increased IT applications, legal and other professional expenses to support corporate infrastructure. Total SG&A non-cash stock compensation expense incurred was $3.8 million in the fourth quarter, compared with $2.6 million in the same period last year.

  • Total revenues were $17.4 million, driven primarily by $14.7 million in XDEMVY net product sales, representing approximately four months of sales following the launch in late August.
  • Cost of sales were $1.6 million, due to manufacturing costs incurred after the approval of XDEMVY, period costs associated with launching one month earlier than expected, the royalty we pay on net product sales and the amortization of the $4.0 million approval milestone we paid to our licensor and are amortizing over a 10-year period.
  • R&D expenses were $50.3 million in 2023 compared to $42.6 million in 2022. The increase was due to $10.6 million of increased payroll and personnel-related costs (including non-cash stock-based compensation), $1.0 million of milestone expense related to the Galatea trial, $0.6 million of increased other indirect expenses, $2.1 million of increased program spend for TP-05, and $0.6 million of increased spend for other early-stage programs. The increase was partially offset by decreases of $6.1 million and $1.1 million, respectively, for the TP-03 and TP-04 programs. Total R&D non-cash stock compensation expense incurred was $5.8 million in 2023, compared with $3.7 million in 2022.

About TP-03
TP-03 (lotilaner ophthalmic solution, 0.25%) is a novel therapeutic designed to treat Demodex blepharitis by targeting and eradicating the root cause of disease – Demodex mite infestation. It was approved by the FDA in 2023 under the brand name XDEMVY® for the treatment of Demodex blepharitis and is being evaluated as an investigational therapy for the treatment of Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD) in patients with Demodex mites. Lotilaner is a well-characterized anti-parasitic agent that paralyzes and eradicates Demodex mites by selectively inhibiting parasite-specific gamma-aminobutyric acid-gated chloride (GABA-Cl) channels. It is a highly lipophilic molecule, which may promote its uptake in the oily sebum of the eye lash follicles where the mites reside.

About TP-04
TP-04 is an aqueous gel formulation of lotilaner, a well-characterized anti-parasitic agent that paralyzes and kills ticks by selectively inhibiting parasite-specific GABA-Cl channels. Tarsus is studying TP-04 for the treatment of papulopustular rosacea (PPR).

About TP-05
TP-05 is an oral systemic formulation of lotilaner, a well-characterized anti-parasitic agent that selectively inhibits parasite-specific GABA-Cl channels. TP-05 is believed to be the only non-vaccine, drug-based, preventative therapeutic in development designed to kill ticks to potentially prevent Lyme disease transmission.

Further, there are other risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ from those set forth in the forward-looking statements and they are detailed from time to time in the reports Tarsus files with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including Tarsus’ Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2023 filed on February 27, 2024, which Tarsus incorporates by reference into this press release, copies of which are posted on its website and are available from Tarsus without charge. However, new risk factors and uncertainties may emerge from time to time, and it is not possible to predict all risk factors and uncertainties. Accordingly, readers are cautioned not to place undue reliance on these forward-looking statements.
