Insights

The Phase III expansion of Millers Branch Solar Facility marks a significant development in Southern Power's renewable energy portfolio. The additional 132 MW capacity, bringing the total to 512 MW, represents a substantial asset that will generate steady, contracted revenue streams through power purchase agreements with creditworthy counterparties Synopsys and Keysight Technologies.

The project strengthens Southern Power's position in the renewable energy market, with their solar portfolio now exceeding 3,050 MW. The strategic location in Texas, a key energy market and the structured PPAs demonstrate sound business planning. The 2026 completion timeline aligns with growing corporate demand for renewable energy credits and clean power solutions.

This expansion reflects the accelerating corporate demand for renewable energy solutions, particularly from tech sector buyers like Synopsys and Keysight. The structured power purchase agreements for environmental attributes indicate a robust revenue model that reduces market risk. The project's scale makes it Southern Power's largest solar facility, representing approximately 17% of their total solar portfolio capacity.

The expansion aligns with broader industry trends toward utility-scale solar development and corporate renewable energy procurement. The Texas location capitalizes on the state's favorable solar resources and growing clean energy market.

ATLANTA, Nov. 21, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Southern Power, a leading U.S. wholesale energy provider and subsidiary of Southern Company, today announced an additional expansion of its 29th solar project — Millers Branch Solar Facility.
