Insights

The migraine therapeutics market in Canada, estimated to hit $400 million by 2025, presents a significant opportunity for Scilex's ELYXYB®. The drug's positioning as a first-line treatment for acute migraines and its potential lower gastrointestinal side effects compared to other NSAIDs could make it a competitive product in the market. Given the drug's fast-acting nature and clinical studies indicating pain relief within 15 minutes, ELYXYB® could capture a share of the patient population that is currently underserved, specifically those with an insufficient response to triptans or with contraindications to their use.

However, the drug's success will hinge on its approval by Health Canada, which is currently reviewing the New Drug Submission. The 12-month anticipated timeline for approval suggests that market entry could be relatively swift, subject to regulatory processes. Scilex's proactive engagement with Health Canada’s Office of Patented Medicines and Liaison during the review process is indicative of the company's commitment to navigating regulatory hurdles effectively.

Scilex's interaction with Health Canada's Office of Patented Medicines and Liaison signals the company's advancement in the regulatory process for ELYXYB®. The company's response to questions on product composition in the patent is a critical step in the approval process, which involves thorough scrutiny of the drug's safety, efficacy and quality. The outcome of this review will not only impact Scilex's business prospects but also has broader implications for patent law and intellectual property rights within the pharmaceutical industry in Canada.

While the review cycles and information requests by Health Canada are standard, they are also indicative of the rigorous nature of drug approval in the country. Companies like Scilex must navigate these complexities to bring new drugs to market and their ability to do so is a testament to their legal and regulatory acumen.

The clinical efficacy of ELYXYB®, as evidenced by the pain relief reported in clinical studies, suggests that the drug could be a valuable addition to migraine treatment options. The emphasis on the drug's rapid onset of action and its favorable gastrointestinal side effect profile addresses two critical concerns for migraine sufferers: the need for timely relief and the desire for treatments with minimal adverse effects.

The drug's potential alignment with unmet needs in the migraine patient population could lead to increased adoption by healthcare providers, particularly for patients who do not respond well to existing treatments like triptans. This adoption will depend on the continued demonstration of the drug's efficacy and safety in a real-world setting post-approval. Monitoring post-market data will be essential for understanding the long-term impact of ELYXYB® on patient outcomes and its place in the broader migraine treatment landscape.

  • ELYXYB® is a first-line treatment and the only FDA-approved, ready-to-use oral solution for the acute treatment of migraine, with or without aura, in adults.1
  • According to market data from 2018, it was found that migraine was more severe than other types of headaches and it impacted more than 2.7 million Canadians with the Canadian migraine therapeutics market estimated to reach approximately $400 million by 2025.2
  • There is strong evidence for the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as a first-line treatment for migraine. ELYXYB® (celecoxib oral solution) is in the same class of agents, is fast acting, and has the potential to have the lowest gastrointestinal (GI) side effects of all NSAIDs.3
  • The anticipated timeline for approval in Canada is approximately 12 months depending on review cycles and information requests by Health Canada. Scilex filed the NDS with Health Canada’s Pharmaceutical Drugs Directorate, Bureau of Cardiology, Allergy and Neurological Sciences in December 2023

PALO ALTO, Calif., March 18, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Scilex Holding Company (Nasdaq: SCLX, “Scilex” or “Company”), an innovative revenue-generating company focused on acquiring, developing and commercializing non-opioid pain management products for the treatment of acute and chronic pain, today announced that it has responded to questions on the product composition in the ELYXYB patent from Health Canada’s Office of Patented Medicines and Liaison (OPML) during review of a New Drug Submission (“NDS”) to Health Canada’s Pharmaceutical Drugs Directorate, Bureau of Cardiology, Allergy and Neurological Sciences for the approval of ELYXYB® for acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in Canada.

Clinicians in a recent market research study expressed their desire for fast and safe alternatives for two large pools of acute migraine patients – those who have an insufficient response to triptan therapy and those who have contraindications to triptan use. ELYXYB®’s product profile mapped with a high degree of certainty to these stated unmet needs. In clinical studies, patients treated with ELYXYB® demonstrated pain relief in as little as 15 minutes, and significant pain relief compared to placebo within 45 minutes in approximately 50% of patients.4,5
