“We achieved our second highest quarterly Adjusted EBITDA, $87 million, despite relatively soft markets and behind only last quarter’s record results. Adjusted EBITDA was up approximately 5 percent, from a very strong second quarter in 2022, with Adjusted Diluted EPS of $0.53,” said Corning Painter, Orion’s chief executive officer. “We are on track to deliver record full year Adjusted EBITDA in 2023 while improving our balance sheet and positioning ourselves for another step up in 2024. We recently published our annual sustainability report, which I highly recommend to you. It features the vision, strategy and values and our progress in bio circular grades and improved air emission controls.”

Jeff Glajch, Orion’s chief financial officer added, “In addition to the solid earnings results outlined by Corning, we continue to generate strong cash flow in the first half of 2023, which allowed us to repurchase $49 million shares and lower our net debt by $76 million, resulting in a net debt ratio of 2.34 times. Volume decreased by 24.1 kmt, year over year. The global economic slowdown impacted both segments.

Net sales decreased by $82.4 million, or 15.2%, year over year, driven primarily by the pass-through effect of declining oil prices and lower volume in both segments. Those were partially offset by improved contractual Rubber carbon black pricing.

Gross profit decreased by $2.7 million, or 2.3%, to $117.1 million, year over year. The decrease was primarily driven by lower volume in both segments, partially offset by improved contractual Rubber carbon black pricing.

Income from operations increased by $6.0 million, or 11.3%, to $58.9 million, year over year, driven primarily by favorable pricing in Rubber Carbon Black segment, partially offset by lower volume in both segments.

Adjusted EBITDA increased by $3.9 million, or 4.7%, to $87.3 million, year over year, primarily due to favorable pricing in Rubber Carbon Black segment, partially offset by lower volume in both segments.

Specialty Carbon Black segment volume declined by 6.1 kmt, or 10.2%, year over year due to weakness in most end markets.

Net sales decreased by $32.4 million, or 17.8%, to $149.5 million, year over year, primarily driven by reduced volume and oil prices.

Adjusted EBITDA declined by $15.5 million, or 34.1%, to $29.9 million, compared with a record quarter last year. These results were primarily driven by global economic slowdown, which resulted in lower volume, mix and decreased cogeneration revenue, a by-product. End-market pricing was stable, which we believe reflects the strength of our value proposition.

Year over year, Adjusted EBITDA per ton decreased by $202.6 or 26.6%, to $557.8, primarily driven by lower volume, mix and lower cogeneration revenue. End-market pricing was stable.

Year over year, Adjusted EBITDA margin decreased 500 basis points to 20.0%.

Rubber Carbon Black segment volume declined by 18.0 kmt, or 9.4%, year over year due to the global economy slowdown.

Net sales declined by $50.0 million, or 13.9%, to $309.3 million, year over year, primarily due to lower volume and oil prices, partially offset by improved contractual Rubber carbon black base price.

Adjusted EBITDA increased by $19.4 million, or 51.1%, to $57.4 million, year over year, driven by contractual base price improvement, which resulted in improved gross profit margins, partially offset by lower volume and decreased cogeneration revenue, a by-product.

Year over year, Adjusted EBITDA per ton increased by $132.3, or 66.8% to $330.5, year over year.

Adjusted EBITDA margin rose 800 basis points to 18.6%.

Debt

As of June 30, 2023, the company net debt was $782.7 million and EBITDA to debt ratio was 2.34 times.

Outlook

“Despite some softness in our end markets, we remain confident that we can deliver another record year. We are now setting our 2023 Adjusted EBITDA guidance range to be $320 million to $350 million, up seven percent at the midpoint, compared with our record 2022 results. We also project full year 2023 Adjusted EPS of $2.00 to $2.25, up nine percent at the midpoint. Free cash flow should be approximately $100 million this year. Importantly, we continue to be on track to realize our 2025 goal of a mid-cycle Adjusted EBITDA earnings capacity of $500 million,” Mr. Painter concluded.
