N-able Announces New Fortified Copies Feature in Cove Data Protection—Driving Stronger Ransomware Protection
N-able (NYSE: NABL) has introduced Fortified Copies, a new feature in its Cove Data Protection solution that provides automatic backup immutability without additional costs or management overhead. The feature creates hourly immutable backups across all devices and retains them for 30 days, protecting against ransomware attacks that target backup systems. Unlike traditional immutability solutions that require WORM locking or object storage, Fortified Copies leverages Cove's cloud-based architecture to provide enhanced cyber resilience without the associated storage and administrative costs. This development aligns with N-able's Ecoverse vision for streamlined IT management.

Insights
This new feature represents an incremental improvement to N-able's existing data protection suite, though not a revolutionary advancement. The automatic implementation of backup immutability without additional costs addresses a critical market need, particularly given the prevalence of ransomware attacks targeting backup systems.
The key technical advantage lies in the architecture's design - storing primary backups off the local network in N-able's private cloud inherently provides better protection than traditional local-first solutions. The automation of Fortified Copies eliminates common friction points around storage costs and administrative overhead that typically accompany immutable backup implementations.
While this update strengthens N-able's competitive position in the MSP-focused data protection market, the impact on revenue and market share will likely be modest as similar capabilities exist among competitors, albeit with different implementation approaches.
The newest feature of Cove delivers automatic backup immutability minus the extra cost and effort
A recent study by Sophos found that
Immutability became a hot topic in the data protection space when ransomware groups started targeting backups to thwart victims’ recovery attempts. However, the methods currently available (such as WORM locking, object storage) to provide immutability for traditional local-first backups can incur significant storage and administrative costs associated with data retention, expiration, and cleanup. These methods also cannot protect against lower-level attacks, such as a factory reset of an entire storage system.
Cove’s architecture is more cyber resilient than legacy backup solutions, because primary backup storage is already off the local network, in an N-able worldwide private cloud. Fortified Copies adds yet another layer of protection.
“With Fortified Copies, we’ve essentially automated backup immutability,” said Stefan Voss, Vice President of Product Management for Cove Data Protection. “Unlike other solutions, there’s nothing to manage. You don’t need to make choices about which devices or data sources ‘deserve’ immutability or configure complex retention policies. It’s another classic example of how Cove makes MSPs’ and IT pros’ lives easier.”
This announcement further expands the N-able Ecoverse vision, which we believe is harmonizing and transforming the management of modern IT, allowing MSPs to be more efficient, resilient, and drive more opportunities through an open, unified ecosystem.
