Insights
Keysight and Coherent's 200G multimode VCSEL collaboration represents a strategic positioning in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market. By doubling data throughput compared to current highest-speed interconnects, this technology addresses a critical bottleneck in data centers supporting AI/ML workloads.
The timing is particularly significant as data center operators face mounting pressure to reduce both capital expenditure and operational costs while scaling AI capabilities. This technology specifically targets both pain points by offering lower manufacturing costs versus single-mode alternatives and reduced power consumption per bit transferred.
What makes this announcement particularly relevant is the alignment with AI architecture requirements. AI clusters require numerous high-speed, short-reach interconnects between GPUs - precisely where multimode VCSELs deliver their greatest advantage over alternative technologies.
For Keysight, this collaboration showcases their test instrumentation leadership position with major industry players like Coherent. Their M8199B Arbitrary Waveform Generator and wideband multimode sampling oscilloscope demonstrate Keysight's ability to support cutting-edge connectivity solutions essential for next-generation data center infrastructure.
While this demonstration represents early-stage technology rather than immediate commercial deployment, it positions Keysight advantageously in the critical optical interconnect market as data centers worldwide upgrade for AI workloads, potentially strengthening their market position in test solutions for high-speed connectivity.
The 200G multimode VCSEL technology demonstration represents a significant advancement in optical interconnect technology with particular implications for AI/ML data center architectures. The doubling of data throughput to 200 Gbps/lane addresses one of the most pressing challenges in modern data centers: keeping pace with the explosive bandwidth demands of AI workloads.
What's most notable about this development is its potential impact on data center economics. As AI deployments scale, optical interconnect costs are consuming an increasing portion of total infrastructure capex while their power requirements similarly impact operational expenses. By offering both lower manufacturing costs and improved power efficiency compared to single-mode alternatives, this technology directly addresses these dual pain points.
For AI-focused data centers specifically, the short-reach, high-density interconnect requirements of GPU clusters align perfectly with multimode VCSEL's strengths. This technology enables the massive east-west traffic patterns required for distributed AI training and inference workloads while maintaining favorable economics.
Keysight's role in providing the advanced testing equipment needed to validate this emerging technology reinforces their position in the high-performance computing ecosystem. The M8199B 256 GSa/s Arbitrary Waveform Generator and wideband multimode sampling oscilloscope demonstrate Keysight's ability to support next-generation connectivity standards, which could strengthen their relationship with manufacturers developing cutting-edge interconnect solutions.
- Collaboration enables 200G characterization, tuning, and validation of the powerful new VCSEL technology
- Increased bandwidth of 200 Gbps/lane doubles data throughput of the current highest speed multimode interconnects
- More efficient and cost-effective technology compared to single-mode transmission

The Keysight M8199B 256 GSa/s Arbitrary Waveform Generator offers a high-performance arbitrary signal source, enabling design development at 160 GBaud and above.
AI/ML deployment is driving extreme growth in the amount of data transfer in data centers. The cost of optical interconnects is an ever-growing portion of the Capex of the data center, while the power consumption of the optical interconnects is an ever-growing portion of Opex. 200G multimode VCSELs revolutionize data transfer and network efficiency, offering the following benefits compared to single-mode transmission:
- Increased Bandwidth: 200 Gbps/lane doubles the data throughput of the current highest speed multimode interconnects.
- Power Efficiency: Significantly lower power-per-bit relative to single-mode alternatives driving down electrical power operational expense and helping large-scale data centers minimize their environmental impact.
- Cost Efficiency: Multimode VCSELs are less costly to manufacture than single-mode technologies, providing lower capital outlay for short-reach data links.
- Compatible Network Architecture: AI pods and clusters require many high-speed, short-reach interconnects to share data amongst GPUs, aligning well with the strength of 200G multimode VCSELs.
The 200G multimode demonstration consists of Keysight’s new wideband multimode sampling oscilloscope technology, Keysight’s M8199B 256 GSa/s Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG) and Coherent’s 200G multimode VCSEL. The M8199B AWG drives a 106.25 GBaud PAM4 electrical signal into the Coherent VCSEL, and the PAM4 optical signal output from the VCSEL is measured on wideband multimode scope displaying the eye diagram. The demo showcases the feasibility and capability of Coherent’s new VCSEL technology as well as Keysight’s ability to characterize and validate this technology.
Lee Xu, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Datacom Business Unit at Coherent, said: “Keysight has been a trusted partner and a leader in test instrumentation technology, providing advanced test solutions to us.
