- None.
- Year-over-year decline in net income
- Increase in noninterest expense and credit loss expense
Insights
The financial results reported by Hanmi Financial Corporation show a mixed performance with a slight decline in net income for the fourth quarter and more notably, for the full year of 2023 compared to the previous year. The details disclosed, such as the decrease in net interest income, an increase in noninterest expense and a rise in credit loss expense, are critical for evaluating the company's operational efficiency and risk management strategies.
The annualized return on average assets (ROAA) and return on average equity (ROAE) are key metrics for assessing the profitability and financial stability of a bank. Hanmi's ROAA and ROAE for both the fourth quarter and full year suggest a stable return on investments, although there is a noted year-over-year decline in profitability. This could signal a need for closer inspection of the bank's interest rate risk management and cost control measures amidst a challenging interest rate environment.
Furthermore, the growth in the loan portfolio and deposit base indicates an expansion strategy, but this should be weighed against the quality of assets and potential risks associated with rapid growth. The reported recovery of credit loss expense and the decline in criticized loans are positive signs of asset quality improvement, which is essential for maintaining investor confidence.
From a market perspective, the performance of Hanmi Financial Corporation provides insights into the competitive landscape of regional banking. The opening of two new branch locations suggests a strategic move to capture more market share and enhance customer reach. The emphasis on a relationship-driven banking strategy may differentiate Hanmi in a sector where customer loyalty and personalized service can lead to a competitive advantage.
The net interest margin (NIM) compression is a concern in the current rising interest rate environment, which can squeeze profitability for banks. However, Hanmi's proactive approach to loan pricing, as evidenced by the weighted average interest rate on new loan production, may help mitigate some of these pressures. The bank's focus on operational efficiencies, technology investments and infrastructure development could further strengthen its position in the market by enabling it to adapt more quickly to changing economic conditions and customer needs.
The broader economic context in which Hanmi operates is characterized by uncertain economic conditions and a challenging interest rate environment. The bank's performance, including its ability to maintain a stable return on equity and assets, is indicative of its resilience in the face of macroeconomic headwinds. The increase in noninterest-bearing deposits, which constitute a significant portion of the deposit portfolio, is a positive aspect as it reduces the bank's cost of funds and enhances net interest income in a rising rate scenario.
However, the reported decline in year-over-year net income and the flattening of the net interest margin underscore the importance of closely monitoring the bank's interest rate risk exposure and the impact of Federal Reserve policy changes. The bank's strategic focus on attracting high-quality borrowers and maintaining a selective lending approach aligns with prudent risk management, especially important in an economic climate marked by uncertainty.

Non-GAAP Financial Measures
Tangible Common Equity to Tangible Assets Ratio
Tangible common equity to tangible assets ratio is supplemental financial information determined by a method other than in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”). This non-GAAP measure is used by management in the analysis of Hanmi’s capital strength. Tangible common equity is calculated by subtracting goodwill and other intangible assets from stockholders’ equity. Banking and financial institution regulators also exclude goodwill and other intangible assets from stockholders’ equity when assessing the capital adequacy of a financial institution. Management believes the presentation of this financial measure excluding the impact of these items provides useful supplemental information that is essential to a proper understanding of the capital strength of Hanmi. This disclosure should not be viewed as a substitute for results determined in accordance with GAAP, nor is it necessarily comparable to non-GAAP performance measures that may be presented by other companies.
The following table reconciles this non-GAAP performance measure to the GAAP performance measure for the periods indicated:
