Comcast Reports 2nd Quarter 2024 Results
Comcast (NASDAQ: CMCSA) reported its Q2 2024 results with some key figures showing mixed performance.
Adjusted EPS rose by 7.0% to $1.21. The company returned $3.4 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.
However, some metrics showed declines: Revenue fell 2.7% to $29.7 billion, Net Income dropped 7.5% to $3.9 billion, and Free Cash Flow decreased by 60.9% to $1.3 billion.
In its Connectivity & Platforms segment, Adjusted EBITDA increased by 1.6% to $8.5 billion, setting a record margin of 41.9%. The Media segment's Adjusted EBITDA also grew by 9%, driven by Peacock's strong performance, which saw a 38% increase in paid subscribers.
However, the Studios and Theme Parks segments faced challenges with lower revenues and Adjusted EBITDA.
Despite these mixed outcomes, the company remains optimistic about future growth, supported by upcoming events like the Paris Summer Olympics.

Insights
Comcast's Q2 2024 results present a mixed bag for investors. The company reported a 2.7% decline in revenue and a 7.5% decline in net income, indicating some pressure on the top and bottom lines. However, Adjusted EPS grew by 7.0% to $1.21, showing strong cost management and effective share repurchases.
One of the bright spots is the 3.6% increase in Broadband ARPU and the 6% revenue growth in the connectivity businesses. This suggests that Comcast is successfully monetizing its existing customer base and potentially gaining new customers in a competitive market. The record-high 41.9% Adjusted EBITDA margin is a notable achievement, indicating efficiency improvements.
However, the 60.9% decrease in free cash flow to $1.3 billion may concern investors, as it impacts the company’s flexibility for further investments or debt repayments. The $3.4 billion returned to shareholders through dividends and buybacks is a positive, but it also raises questions about the sustainability of such returns given the cash flow constraints.
Overall, while there are some positive aspects, the declining revenues and significantly reduced free cash flow underscore challenges that need addressing.
The technological advancements in Comcast's connectivity infrastructure stand out. The company expanded its Mid-Split Technology deployment to 42% of its footprint, a move that enhances its broadband offerings by increasing upstream speeds. These upgrades are important for supporting the growing demand for high-speed internet, which is a key driver of ARPU growth.
The steady growth in domestic wireless lines by 322,000 additions and a 20% overall increase in customer lines are indicative of successful cross-selling strategies between broadband and wireless services. This integrative approach could help Comcast maintain its competitive edge against other telecom giants.
Comcast's focus on mid- to large-sized business customers has also shown results, with a 5.7% increase in Business Services Connectivity revenue. This sector promises stable, recurring revenue streams and is less susceptible to churn compared to the residential segment.
While the technological upgrades and growth in customer bases are promising, the reduced total customer relationships and increased churn rates in residential segments highlight ongoing competitive pressures.
Comcast’s media segment, particularly Peacock, is a strong performer this quarter. The platform saw a 38% increase in paid subscribers to 33 million and a 28% revenue increase to $1 billion. This growth has contributed significantly to the 9% increase in Media Adjusted EBITDA. Peacock's success underscores the potential for Comcast to capitalize on the growing trend toward digital streaming platforms.
However, the 27% decline in Studios revenue and the 10.6% decline in Theme Parks revenue reflect broader industry challenges, such as fluctuating consumer preferences and economic conditions. The upcoming launch of Epic Universe in 2025 could revitalize the Theme Parks segment, but the immediate outlook remains cautious.
The upcoming Paris Summer Olympics presents a significant opportunity for Comcast to leverage its broadcasting and streaming capabilities. If executed well, it could boost viewership and subscriber growth across their platforms.
While media and technology investments show promise, the overall revenue decline and varied performance across segments suggest the need for balanced strategies to manage risk and seize growth opportunities.

Revenue for Studios decreased primarily due to lower theatrical revenue and content licensing revenue. Theatrical revenue decreased primarily due to higher revenue from the volume and strength of theatrical releases in the prior year period, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Fast X. Content licensing revenue declined primarily due to the timing of when content was made available by our television studios.
Adjusted EBITDA for Studios decreased due to lower revenue, which more than offset lower operating expenses. The decrease in operating expenses primarily reflected lower programming and production expenses, mainly due to lower costs associated with theatrical releases.

1 |
We define Adjusted Net Income and Adjusted EPS as net income attributable to Comcast Corporation and diluted earnings per common share attributable to Comcast Corporation shareholders, respectively, adjusted to exclude the effects of the amortization of acquisition-related intangible assets, investments that investors may want to evaluate separately (such as based on fair value) and the impact of certain events, gains, losses or other charges that affect period-over-period comparisons. See Table 5 for reconciliations of non-GAAP financial measures. |
|
2 |
We define Adjusted EBITDA as net income attributable to Comcast Corporation before net income (loss) attributable to noncontrolling interests, income tax expense, investment and other income (loss), net, interest expense, depreciation and amortization expense, and other operating gains and losses (such as impairment charges related to fixed and intangible assets and gains or losses on the sale of long-lived assets), if any. From time to time, we may exclude from Adjusted EBITDA the impact of certain events, gains, losses or other charges (such as significant legal settlements) that affect the period-to-period comparability of our operating performance. See Table 4 for reconciliation of non-GAAP financial measure. |
|
3 |
All earnings per share amounts are presented on a diluted basis. |
|
4 |
We define Free Cash Flow as net cash provided by operating activities (as stated in our Consolidated Statement of Cash Flows) reduced by capital expenditures and cash paid for intangible assets. From time to time, we may exclude from Free Cash Flow the impact of certain cash receipts or payments (such as significant legal settlements) that affect period-to-period comparability. Cash payments related to certain capital or intangible assets, such as the construction of Universal Beijing Resort, are presented separately in our Consolidated Statement of Cash Flows and are therefore excluded from capital expenditures and cash paid for intangible assets for Free Cash Flow. See Table 4 for reconciliation of non-GAAP financial measure. |
|
5 |
Constant currency growth rates are calculated by comparing the results for each comparable prior year period adjusted to reflect the average exchange rates from each current year period presented rather than the actual exchange rates that were in effect during the respective periods. See Table 6 for reconciliations of non-GAAP financial measures. |
|
6 |
Adjusted EBITDA is the measure of profit or loss for our segments. From time to time, we may present Adjusted EBITDA for components of our reportable segments, such as Peacock. We believe these measures are useful to evaluate our financial results and provide a basis of comparison to others, although our definition of Adjusted EBITDA may not be directly comparable to similar measures used by other companies. Adjusted EBITDA for components are generally presented on a consistent basis with the respective segments and include direct revenue and operating costs and expenses attributed to the component operations. |
Numerical information is presented on a rounded basis using actual amounts, unless otherwise noted. The change in Peacock paid subscribers is calculated using rounded paid subscriber amounts. Minor differences in totals and percentage calculations may exist due to rounding.

(1) | Acquisition-related intangible assets are recognized as a result of the application of Accounting Standards Codification Topic 805, Business Combinations (such as customer relationships), and their amortization is significantly affected by the size and timing of our acquisitions. Amortization of intangible assets not resulting from business combinations (such as software and acquired intellectual property rights used in our theme parks) is included in Adjusted Net Income and Adjusted EPS. |
