Insights

This groundbreaking initiative by Constellation marks a significant shift in residential energy markets, offering D.C. households direct access to nuclear power at 11.99 cents per kilowatt-hour - notably below current utility rates. The pilot program leverages Emission Free Energy Certificates (EFECs) from Constellation's nuclear facilities, creating a new revenue stream while expanding clean energy access. With a 94.4% capacity factor in 2023 and plans for market expansion in 2025, this program could reshape residential energy consumption patterns and boost Constellation's market position. The company's dominant nuclear fleet, avoiding 125 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually, positions it strategically in the growing clean energy market.

This retail program represents a strategic alignment with growing public support for nuclear energy and evolving climate policy. Recent Pew and Gallup polls showing majority support for nuclear power validate the timing of this launch. The program's structure, utilizing EFECs while maintaining existing utility infrastructure, creates a scalable model for clean energy transition without compromising grid reliability. With nuclear providing nearly 20% of U.S. electricity and about half of carbon-free generation, this consumer-focused initiative could accelerate nuclear energy's role in decarbonization efforts.

As public support for nuclear power grows, Washington, D.C. residents can show their pride in going nuclear as part of the pilot market for the new program

BALTIMORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Constellation Energy Corporation (NASDAQ: CEG), the nation’s largest producer of carbon-free energy, today announced America’s first-ever product allowing consumers to power their homes with 100% clean nuclear energy, through a new retail pilot program in Washington, D.C.

Clean, carbon-free nuclear energy is experiencing a major resurgence, with U.S. public support for nuclear at its highest in a decade, according to recent polls conducted by Pew and Gallup. Both polls found that a majority of Americans support nuclear and recognize it as a safe, reliable, and carbon-free energy source. Now Washingtonians can show their support for carbon-free nuclear energy—and help fight climate change—by purchasing 100% clean nuclear energy to power their homes.

“Constellation is the No. 1 operator of clean, reliable nuclear energy plants and we’re proud to be the first to offer this zero-carbon energy source to American households. And we can think of no better place to pilot this program than our nation’s capital where nuclear energy enjoys strong bipartisan support from Republicans and Democrats alike,” said Kathleen Barrón, Constellation Chief Strategy and Growth Officer. “Policymakers, tech companies and even former Miss America and nuclear engineer Grace Stanke, have all embraced this zero-carbon, always-on energy source, and now Washingtonians can too.”

Nuclear energy is safe, clean, reliable, and affordable. In fact, the clean nuclear energy offer at 11.99 cents per kilowatt-hour is lower than the local D.C. utility’s current supply rate. By choosing carbon-free nuclear energy, Washingtonians can save money on their energy bills while they help fight climate change.

To sign up for nuclear energy, Washington, D.C. residents simply visit here and enter their address and utility bill account number. Participating customers will continue to receive electricity through the existing utility infrastructure. Constellation, through its retail energy supplier subsidiary, will match 100% of these customers’ electricity usage with Emission Free Energy Certificates (EFECs) generated at Constellation’s nuclear-powered clean energy centers in PJM—the regional electricity grid that serves 13 states and Washington, D.C. This approach allows customers to support clean energy without any changes to their current service setup or reliability.

Washington, D.C. is the first pilot market for the new residential nuclear program, and Constellation plans to expand the pilot to additional markets in 2025.

Nuclear energy is the nation’s largest source of carbon-free electricity, providing nearly 20% of the total electricity supply in the United States and about half of its carbon-free energy. It is a reliable, always-on power source, capable of operating around the clock to meet the nation’s energy needs with zero greenhouse gas emissions. By delivering continuous, clean power, nuclear energy helps stabilize the electric grid and ensures reliability and resiliency, even during extreme weather events. Nuclear also is key to American energy security and independence and provides good-paying, family-sustaining jobs to keep communities strong.

As the nation’s largest nuclear energy operator, Constellation’s annual output is nearly 90% carbon-free. Constellation’s award winning nuclear generating facilities achieved capacity factors of 94.4% in 2023. The company’s hydro, wind and solar facilities paired with the nation’s largest nuclear fleet have the generating capacity to power the equivalent of 16 million homes, providing about 10% of the nation’s clean energy. Constellation’s clean generation fleet avoids 125 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually, which is equivalent to taking more than 29 million gas-powered cars off the road for one year. This unmatched combination of reliability, sustainability, and scale makes nuclear energy essential to achieving a carbon-free future.
