ATI Physical Therapy Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2022 Results
ATI Physical Therapy (NYSE: ATIP) reported its Q4 and full year 2022 financial results, revealing a net revenue of $161.8 million, representing a 3% quarter-over-quarter and 4% year-over-year increase. Net patient revenue also saw a 3% quarter-over-quarter and 4% year-over-year rise, totaling $146.2 million. Despite a net loss of $102.4 million due to non-cash impairment charges, Adjusted EBITDA improved to $6.4 million. Fourth Quarter 2022 Results
Supplemental tables of key performance metrics for the first quarter of 2020 through the fourth quarter of 2022 are presented after the financial statements at the end of this press release. Commentary on performance results in the fourth quarter of 2022 is as follows:
- Net revenue was
compared to$161.8 million in the third quarter of 2022 and$156.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2021, an increase of$155.8 million 3% quarter over quarter and4% year over year. - Net patient revenue was
compared to$146.2 million in the third quarter of 2022 and$142.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2021, an increase of$140.3 million 3% quarter over quarter and4% year over year. See below for discussion of drivers to net patient revenue (i.e., patient visits and Rate per Visit). - Other revenue was
compared to$15.6 million in the third quarter of 2022 and$14.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2021, an increase of$15.5 million 8% quarter over quarter and1% year over year. - Visits per Day ("VPD") were 22,316 compared to 21,493 in the third quarter of 2022 and 20,649 in the fourth quarter of 2021, an increase of
4% quarter over quarter and8% year over year as the business continues to ramp from the impact of COVID.
VPD per Clinic was 24.1 compared to 23.2 in the third quarter of 2022 and 22.8 in the fourth quarter of 2021, an increase of 0.9 quarter over quarter and 1.3 year over year.
- Rate per Visit was
compared to$103.99 in the third quarter of 2022 and$103.46 in the fourth quarter of 2021, an increase of$104.51 1% quarter over quarter and a decrease of1% year over year. - Salaries and related costs were
compared to$90.7 million in the third quarter of 2022 and$90.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2021, essentially flat quarter over quarter and an increase of$88.1 million 3% year over year. The increase was primarily due to wage inflation and a higher proportion of physical therapists versus physical therapy assistants in support of ATI's patient care model.
PT salaries and related costs per visit were compared to$54.92 in the third quarter of 2022 and$56.20 in the fourth quarter of 2021, a decrease of$55.73 2% quarter over quarter and1% year over year. The decreases were due to higher labor productivity of 9.0 VPD per clinical FTE compared to 8.7 in the third quarter of 2022 and 8.3 in the fourth quarter of 2021. The year over year decrease was partially offset by higher labor costs per clinical FTE.
- Rent, clinic supplies, contract labor and other was
compared to$49.1 million in the third quarter of 2022 and$51.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2021, a decrease of$47.8 million 4% quarter over quarter with 3 less clinics on average and an increase of3% year over year with 19 more clinics on average.
PT rent, clinic supplies, contract labor and other per clinic was compared to$51,252 in the third quarter of 2022 and$53,945 in the fourth quarter of 2021, a decrease of$50,976 5% quarter over quarter and an increase of1% year over year. The quarter over quarter decrease was primarily driven by lower use of contract labor and the impact of cost control actions. The year over year increase was primarily due to greater use of contract labor in addition to a higher cost for contract labor. - Provision for doubtful accounts was
compared to$2.5 million in the third quarter of 2022 and$2.8 million in the fourth quarter of$2.1 million 2021. PT provision as a percent of net patient revenue was1.7% compared to2.0% in the third quarter of 2022 and1.5% in the fourth quarter of 2021, reflecting steady collections. - Selling, general and administrative expenses were
compared to$27.6 million in the third quarter of 2022 and$25.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2021, an increase of$29.9 million 9% quarter over quarter primarily due to higher severance costs and a decrease of8% year over year primarily due to lower non-ordinary legal and regulatory costs and executive search fees partially offset by higher severance costs. - Non-cash goodwill, intangible and other asset impairment charges totaled
