Insights

ASUR's January 2025 traffic report reveals significant regional divergence that warrants careful analysis. The headline 1.7% total passenger growth masks important underlying trends:

In Mexico, which represents ~58% of ASUR's total traffic, the 4.1% decline was primarily driven by Cancun's performance (-5.5%). This is particularly noteworthy as Cancun, the group's largest operation, saw international traffic drop 7.2%. However, smaller airports like Merida (+2.3%) and Oaxaca (+8.7%) showed resilience, suggesting domestic tourism remains robust in certain markets.

Colombia's 12.3% growth stands out, with Rionegro Airport's impressive 16.9% increase demonstrating strong momentum in both domestic and international segments. The 24.2% surge in international traffic at Rionegro signals Colombia's growing importance as a regional hub.

Puerto Rico's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport continued its strong performance with 9.3% growth, including a notable 20.5% increase in international traffic, indicating successful route development and tourism recovery.

The divergent performance has important revenue implications. While Mexico's decline affects the high-margin international segment, the growth in Colombia and Puerto Rico provides some offset. The shift in traffic mix, with domestic traffic growing 4.3% while international declined 1.8%, may impact aeronautical revenue per passenger due to different fee structures.

Passenger traffic increased year-on-year by Colombia 12.3%, 9.3% in Puerto Rico and decreased by 4.1% in Mexico
