Insights
This partnership between EnergyHub (Alarm.com's subsidiary) and Ameren Illinois represents a strategic expansion in the high-growth electric vehicle infrastructure management space. The successful pilot program—which exceeded enrollment targets in just three months—demonstrates strong market validation for EnergyHub's grid-edge flexibility solutions.
The initiative positions EnergyHub to capture value from two critical energy transition trends: increasing EV adoption and grid modernization needs. By helping utilities manage charging loads, EnergyHub addresses a growing pain point for electric grid operators facing capacity constraints from electrification.
While financial terms weren't disclosed, this adds to EnergyHub's impressive utility client base (now 80+ utilities managing over 1.6M distributed energy resources and more than 2GW of flexible capacity). The partnership enhances EnergyHub's market leadership in demand response and virtual power plant capabilities.
For Alarm.com shareholders, this represents incremental growth potential beyond their core security and smart home platform. As vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home functionality develops, EnergyHub is well-positioned to monetize these advanced capabilities through its established utility relationships. The equitable program design focusing on underserved communities also aligns with increasing ESG priorities among institutional investors.
Pilots are designed to deliver bulk and distribution grid benefits while enabling participation across Ameren Illinois’ service territory.
The pilots will enable Ameren Illinois to reduce grid impact by shifting EV charging outside periods of peak demand or high wholesale energy prices, which often occur simultaneously. At the distribution level, managed charging will help reduce thermal overloading of hardware, enabling the deferral of infrastructure investment and reducing costs for customers. Participating drivers receive incentives for allowing the utility to manage vehicle charging schedules and are guaranteed their desired charge level by the time they specify. They have the option to override the schedule at any time.
Both the residential and commercial EV managed charging programs are structured to increase participation in Equity Investment Eligible Communities (EIEC). Residential participants receive a
“As EV adoption grows among residential and commercial customers, we believe managed charging has an important role to play in helping deliver reliable, affordable power to our customers,” said Anjuli Kampwerth at Ameren Illinois. “The popularity of these programs shows that interest extends to every corner of our service territory.”
EnergyHub’s managed charging solution works through direct integrations with both electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) providers and EV OEMs, helping maximize customer participation. Demand response and dynamic load shaping capabilities enable EnergyHub’s utility clients to manage peak demand and distribution grid impacts today, while laying the foundation for additional grid value through vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid functionality.
“Ameren Illinois’ success bringing EV managed charging to every community in their service territory demonstrates their commitment to equitable program design and implementation,” said Seth Frader-Thompson, President of EnergyHub. “We’re excited to bring the lessons from these residential and commercial programs to our clients across North America.”
