The termination of the agreement with Novo Nordisk significantly impacted revenue streams. This highlights the company's reliance on partnership agreements for revenue. The decrease in research and development expenses by
For retail investors, the major points of interest are the company's robust cash reserves and the handling of increased expenses amid declining revenues. Monitoring future financial reports will be essential to gauge the long-term impact of these changes and the sustainability of the company’s financial health.
Market Position and Strategic Moves: The completion of the DETECT-trial and the upcoming merger with Ceapro Inc. are pivotal events. The successful completion of the DETECT-trial, expected by the third quarter of 2024, could potentially open new revenue streams and strengthen Aeterna’s market position. Clinical trials are a critical component in the pharmaceutical industry, as positive results can significantly boost a company's value and market perception.
The merger with Ceapro Inc. is a strategic move towards diversifying Aeterna’s portfolio and expanding its market reach. Mergers of equals are particularly interesting as they can lead to enhanced capabilities without the substantial cash outlays typical of acquisitions. The expected synergies from this merger, including shared technology and combined expertise, could result in improved efficiencies and product offerings. However, mergers also come with integration risks and potential initial disruptions.
For retail investors, understanding the potential long-term benefits of the DETECT-trial and the merger is crucial. While the immediate financial results show a decline, these strategic initiatives could pave the way for future growth and stability.

About Macimorelin (Macrilen®; GHRYVELIN™)
Macimorelin, an oral drug used for the diagnosis of adult growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) is approved for marketing under the brand name GHRYVELIN™ in the European Economic Area and Macrilen® in the United States. In addition, Aeterna Zentaris is currently conducting the Phase 3 safety and efficacy study AEZS-130-P02 (the "DETECT-trial") evaluating macimorelin for the diagnosis of childhood-onset growth hormone deficiency (CGHD).
Macimorelin (Macrilen®; GHRYVELIN™), a ghrelin receptor agonist, is an orally active peptidomimetic molecule that stimulates the secretion of growth hormone from the pituitary gland. Stimulated growth hormone levels are measured in blood samples taken after oral administration of macimorelin for the assessment of AGHD. Approval of macimorelin for use in adult was granted by the FDA in 2017 and by the EMEA in 2019, based on Phase III data showing that oral macimorelin provides accuracy comparable to that of standard insulin tolerance testing (ITT), but has a more favorable safety profile compared to ITT. Oral macimorelin also reduces false positive test results, helping to avoid unnecessary treatment of patients.
